Sleeping Positions..wtf

So I’ve read left side is best to sleep on.  That’s great for me because I’m a left side sleeper anyway.  However, now my left hip is becoming sore from laying on it all the time and so I have to move to the right side or my back.  I read that on your back you can stop blood flow to the baby and slow it down on the right side?  Sometimes I wake up on my back in the middle of the night and freak out.  Or if I turn on my right side I’m all paranoid I’m doing harm to the baby.  Is there really any truth to these sleeping positions.  Am I really harming the baby if I sleep on my back or side.  I’m tired of being stressed out about something so simple as how to sleep!

  • If you feel bad move. Don't go crazy trying to sleep the right way. I end up on my back a lot and then I'll wake up because it's uncomfortable.

  • I'm experiencing the same issue.  I *thought* it was ok as long as you didn't lose feeling in your legs but I may be wrong.  I'm still researching this because I find that sometimes I need to be on my back for a while to be comfortable.especially since I can't sleep on my stomach. Fingers crossed others will chime in!

My Dr said not to worry that you will wake up if something isn't right sleeping on your back. I believe either side is fine just don't lay on your back if you can help it the further along we get. Sometimes I wake up on my back too

I am having a similar issue except when I sleep on my left side I wake up with my left ear in incredible pain. On the inside and out has anyone else experienced this?

Everything I've heard says you'll know if it's uncomfortable or causing issues so sleep however you want.

I think sleeping on your back is only a real issue later in pregnancy. The extra weight in your abdomen can put pressure on your aorta and restrict blood flow. At this point I don't think any of us are big enough for that to happen. I still end up on my stomach most of the time.
  • My doctor told me no sleeping on my back after 12 weeks but either side was okay.
  • I'm having the same issue I normally sleep on my left side anyway, but my hip is killing me and wakes me up every night. I usually will
Just switch from right to left I never sleep
On my back even not pregnant just not comfortable for me. The pain does suck though!

  • From everything that I have read sleeping on your back in the end of your second and third trimester can compresses your IVC (inferior vena cava) which is the vein that takes blood back to you heart...It shouldn't affect your aorta much though because it is an artery and doesn't compress as easily as veins do. But your body will wake you up if you need to move just as it does when you need to go to the bathroom. Either side sleeping is okay.

Yes- my ear hurts almost like it got squished? I have a cartilage piercing in my right ear that will get really sore if I lay on that side too long. I have to switch back and forth during the night because my hips start to ache.

Either side is fine, but just try to not go to sleep on your back. If you role over in the middle of the night, baby will be just fine!
  • My arm hurts from the side sleeping!
  • With my first pregnancy and now this one, I sleep both on my left and right sides and I have a body pillow on either side of me so that I can hug and throw my leg over it to stack my hips. I find this helps and I haven't had any hip pain yet, though I know I will once I get further along (I remember waking up with sore hips with my first pregnancy). I also sleep in a position in between being on my side and on my back with one of the pillows propped behind me to support me from totally lying on my back, so when my arm/ear goes numb from sleeping on the one side, I'll roll slightly back towards the other pillow and can find a comfortable spot without being totally on my back. I didn't purchase pregnancy pillows, I just bought two long body pillows from Costco for cheap, $15 bucks each I think...comfy! :)
