High BP - Sent for Ultrasound re: Amniotic Fluid

Hi everyone,

I debated putting this post in the daily symptoms or the new challenges, etc. threat but I didn't think that it fit in either of those.

My blood pressure has been somewhat high lately - not alarmingly so, but high enough that my OBGYN wants more frequent follow-up appointments with me (top number is in 140's, bottom number has been in the 90's). Today, my doctor advised that he wants me to get an ultrasound to check on the amniotic fluid. He seemed to imply to me that there can be some kind of connection between high blood pressure and either too much or too little amniotic fluid.

Since that appointment, I have unfortunately let my nervousness get the best of me and have been Googling the connection between blood pressure and quantity of amniotic fluid. Unfortunately, Dr. Google has not been overly helpful! Has anyone else had this oddity come up with their appointments?

Thanks so much!

Re: High BP - Sent for Ultrasound re: Amniotic Fluid

  • I have pregnancy induced hypertension, but all of my amniotic fluid levels are perfectly normal, so there's definitely no correlation for me. I'm on a low dose of Labatelol (or however you spell it) to keep my pressures in the 130/80's or lower.

  • I had a stressful work situation right before my last appointment, leading me to have a BP reading of 139/90. Coupled with the swelling in my feet and ankles, the doctor immediately sent me to L&D for testing.

I was there for a couple of hours, during which they monitored fetal HR, my BP, and did an ultrasound to measure amniotic fluid. My BP decreased, though not as much as I wanted, and everything else measured fine, so they sent me home with a jug for urine. I had to collect my urine for 24 hours, then I took it to the lab and they ran the protein levels. Everything seems ok now.

My doctor did schedule an extra appointment for me.

One thing I have been finding is that when I'm having my BP done, if I concentrate on relaxing and focus on my breathing, my BP reads lower!

That's all I have to share about my experience. I hope you and your little one are fine. Don't stress yourself, though, because you'll make it worse! Concentrate on breathing and relaxing, and visualize your beautiful baby.

I'm in the same boat except I'm on a calcium channel blocker and not a beta blocker. I go in for weekly NSTs and my fluid levels are always good. Btw, I was diagnosed with gest. hypertension at 26 weeks

To be officially diagnosed with pre eclampsia you need two blood pressure readings (over 140/90 ) 6 hours apart. So they would have to monitor you for that. Your preeclampsia can affect size of baby as it directly affects blood flow to baby. We obviously don't know all your history but please stay off of google! It is not your friend sometimes! :) relax for now and write down all your questions for your doctor.

Thanks for all of your supportive comments :)

Going to try to restrain myself from consulting Dr. Internet/Dr. Google for the remainder of my pregnancy.
  • @jennlun hi there I have hp higher than yours and am on BP meds, my doc also ordered 2 u/s to check growth and fluid. My baby is in the upper 70% for fluid meaning she is super duper safe! While her growth is a little lower. I also freaked and Google and asked lots of questions, the reasoning is they want to make sure your fluid levels are the same for growth and to reduce risks of pre ecampsia (sp?l) Anyway do not worry! The fact that your dr is checking this means that they are making sure that the BP isn't impacting the growth or increasing the risks. My doc has another us scheduled at 36 weeks to check it again being as most of us are pretty far along, the risks are really really small. Just be aware of headaches, dizziness, drink lots of fluids and rest. I also have weekly nst tests and my kid has never look anything but awesome. So while it is scary the fact that they are aware and working on it means you might get some meds to bring you down a bit :) hope this helps
