There are lots of articles on this on every baby website. The hospital will provide most essentials, so it's more about what will make you comfortable. If you wear contacts, definitely bring a case, solution and your glasses. Anything else is up to you.
  • All you need absolutely need are weather-appropriate outfits for you & baby to wear home (think comfort first) and a blanket for baby. You'll definitely want your own face wash, shampoo/conditioner, deodorant, and toothbrush/toothpaste. You're probably going to want snacks and drinks. You may want your own pads, nursing pads, and diapers in the brand you'll be using for baby. You might wish you had brought a little makeup if you decide not to.

Take it easy, think practicality, and make sure the car seat is properly installed. Everything else is unnecessary stress unless it makes you happy.

I laughed out loud reading some of this!!!

Op non of this is to poke fun at you. It's a lot of crazy junk that's been collected over the entirety of our bump journey together. I'm packing light.

-comfy clothes (no cute going home outfits for me)
-house shoes (also to go home in)
    -a pillow
    -tooth brush and tooth paste
    -travel shampoo
    - body wash
    -hair ties
    -light makeup

    -boppy
    -receiving blankets
    -sleepers
-cute outfit for pics and going home
-super man hat and socks :)

...something random that I forgot last time is the insert for the car seat. It's a double layered thingy. I'm not sure what it's called but it keeps the baby's head from moving in the car seat. They look so tiny the first time you put them in Eeee. I didn't even think to pack it last time.

We packed the little head thing but they wouldn't let us leave with it in...we had to remove it. But honestly, you could drive to the other side of the parking lot and put it in.

Don't forget flip flops to shower in!
  • The bump actually gave me a really great list last week... https://www.thebump.com/a/checklist-packing-a-hospital-bag

I went through that as my starting point.

    :-)
  • I should add I also packed the boppy and a couple little outfits for my little one (different sizes) since we're having photos taken in the hospital.

The reason they wouldn't let you have the head support is because you shouldn't use anything in a car seat that does not come with the car seat. All of the cute shoulder straps and head supports shouldn't be used. If a newborn needs head support in the car seat, the nurses should be able to show you how to roll receiving blankets and use them. Sorry to hijack the post, my husband is a car seat tech, so I know extras is a big no no.

Sorry if I'm being obtuse - if my car seat came with an infant insert, is that ok, or is that what you all are talking about?

Yup! As long as it came with it, it's totally fine to use.
  • Call labor and delivery and find out what they do and don't provide. During the tour of my OB unit, I found out all I need to bring is clothes for baby and I to go home in and shower shoes.
