Prenatal yoga

There is a yoga studio in my area that offers prenatal yoga classes. You sign up month to month. I would like to go for at least a few months.

How early is too early to join? If you arent showing should you just stick to regular yoga classes? I am wondering if there is a social etiquette one needs to be aware of. Anyone know or have thoughts? I would hate to show up and be the only person not 7-8 months pregnant!

Re: Prenatal yoga

  • I'm sure you can start anytime. I don't think it matters how pregnant you are especially since it's prenatal yoga. If it were something that was strenuous it would be a different story.
    Sounds like fun!

  • Join anytime.  I do the one at my gym since before i was showing.  I still got back pain, so i need the yoga belly or not!

  • I would start as early as possible.  I went at 11 weeks.  It has helped relieve some of my SI joint pain and it was awesome to connect with other moms.

  • I started when I was just starting to show and the other ladies were a couple months ahead of me, but it was a nice small group and I felt very welcome. It helps so much eith back pain and what you can do to feel more comfortable.

    Thanks for sharing! =)
  • I started prenatal yoga when I was 9 weeks and the women in the class were at differant stages in their pregnancy. The instructor said its ok to start anytime. I've learned a lot about what positions to do when my back hurts, when I have round ligament pain, tension, and even which positions help when you're in labor. The 6 week session I joined just ended but I definatly intend on joining the next session when it starts.
  • start any time....I started at week 11 :)
  • I wouldn't do regular yoga after the 1st trimester. Besides the positions being great for hips and back... It's also important not to do positions on your back which definitely doesn't happen in prenatal yoga.
  • I started at 13 weeks. I've had ladies in my class as early as 9 weeks. It's so beneficial for your body with respect to breathing, stretching, posture, and relaxation that you should go as early as you want! Plus you get to meet a whole new group of mothers. Even my instructor is pregnant right now :)
