Coffee during first tri

sorry if this has already been discussed, I used the search function and couldn't find anything.
The nurse educator at my OB's office told me to avoid caffeine during the 1st trimester, but I am seriously dragging! I have never heard this before, everything I've read just says keep it minimal. Do you think one small cup is dangerous? What have you all heard?

Re: Coffee during first tri

  • 200mg or less per day is considered safe. With that being said, I was told by my OB that one cup of coffee a day is okay. Obviously no caffeine is best, but if you need coffee to get you through the day that's okay too.

  • I echo the previous post. 200mg or less / day is considered safe. However, caffeine has been linked to miscarriage and low birth weight, which is why intake > than 200mg / day isn't recommended. My Dr. Is fine with 1-2 cups of coffee or soda each day.

Girl, sometimes you need it! Today was one of those days for me. But you could also be dragging because you are creating a human being. Try to get more sleep to limit your caffeine intake.
  • I thought this was another Gif party. Shucks :-( what everybody else said. Basically a cup a day at most (not espresso or Mountain Dew though-too much in those.) none is best but if you cannot avoid it, 200mg per day

  • I've been drinking decaf when I do drink it (3-4x per week). Obv it doesn't have the caffeine, but I think it tricks my mind to fulfilling that urge. Also remember there's caffeine in chocolate, teas, and other stuff so just be careful.
  • That is a good point. BTW there is also some caffeine in decaf. It is just a tiny amount. When you go with decaf though, or green tea… The amount is very minuscule
  • I'm so glad you brought this up today! I'm pissed because I decided to splurge on Starbucks and despite requesting decaf, and confirming decaf, IT WAS NOT DECAF! Sorry, so pregnant, so irritable. I got halfway through and had to toss it.

With that said, yep 1-2 cups a day should be fine. Did it my first pregnancy and doing it now with OB's blessing.

Same here- my doc said 1-2 cups a day is fine.
  • I have avoided. I drink mostly water. But i can hatdly survive the dat. So since today i had to be up at 415 and didn't fall asleep until after 1am. I got a small cup of coffee. Didn't drink it all either. But it helped. I am 10 weeks today.
  • I used to drink a cup a day..well maybe 2...of espresso...but ever since I found out I haven't been able to. At first the taste made my stomach turn. Now even the smell is nauseating. I stick with the occasional cup of tea n try to sleep as much as possible.

I've been drinking about 1/2 cup per day. I LOVE coffee so initially it was hard. Now I have an aversion to it, so that makes it a bit easier to avoid, but I am dragging.
  • Ugh, I CRAVE Starbucks. So delicious. PLUS, it's Frappuccino Happy Hour right now!!! You can order with half-caff too.

  • @lizzyisOKC how did you know it wasn't decaf? I think they taste the same! Were you jittery? That's such crap! I confirm everytime too and would be pissed.
  • I can't have caffeine anyway but I hear you on the feeling draggy. Maybe if you're still worried there's some other things you can try. My doctor wrote me a script for 1 mg folic acid daily to help a little with energy. I also found it made a huge difference trying to fit in as many nutrient dense foods as I could in. Hello smoothies <3
  • I went from 5+cups a day down to a 1/2-1 cup a day. First sign to my boss I was pregnant. She was joking around they couldn't find LO on my belly because my blood content is usually 1/2 caffeine 1/2 blood. It was OK because she knew baby was ok and def made me laugh with the comment. But it def true. My coworkers from my last job are in shock that I'm down so much because I did 10-15 cups a day when I worked there
  • Ask you ob, mine was cool with 1 or 2 cups I make myself. Starbucks has 2x the caffeine b/c they brew it so strong. I did this with the 1st one even when I was breastfeeding and it didn't affect her at all.
  • grkgdss00  I was definitely jittery. I'm really sensitive to caffeine to begin with and avoid it, but I got halfway through and started shaking. I know that a lot of Starbucks drinks are crazy customized, and I'm guilty of that, but sometimes it's a medical condition. Not to mention, if I'm paying $5 for a freaking beverage (and one without alcohol at that) I want it made correctly!

  • I drink one cup every morning. Sometimes that is Starbucks but I get a tall instead of the venti I'm use to. I've always had to have my coffee when I first wake up. I've learned that if I make my cup of coffee and just sip on it slowly I don't even end up drinking the entire cup. I think it's more just habit for me. But my dr told me one a day won't hurt me aslong as the rest of the day i stay away from caffeine.

Doesn't decaf still have some caffeine? I've switched over to decaf completely and I feel the same. Maybe it's just the ritual I like?

I have had one cup per day.  (Un)fortunately, I've had some aversion to the smell/taste of some coffee so that's made it easier!  It's hard to remember that my one cup is all I get.  I've almost ordered caffeinated tea or pop a couple of times and quickly made the switch to water.  It will all be worth it in the end :)

  • I LOVE(D) coffee. Somewhere in my 6th week, my stomach turned to it though.

Haven't had a cup since and I cringe at the thought. I even went out and bought decaf coffee.

What I was doing when I was still enjoying it was half caff half decaf before work. Small size. Made at home.
  • @CMDD yes decaf has small amounts of caffeine, but maybe 5-10% of what regular has.

The book I'm reading says a small cup of regular coffee (not espresso like I make) is okay in second and third trimesters but none should be had in the first trimester when miscarriage is most likely.
  • I'd be in seriously trouble if it caused miscarriages, I keep it under 200 MG almost none on weekends when I can stay in bed, or like today, didn't even get out of PJ's but without a little caffeine, I'm a 100% in withdrawals, like serious caffeine addict, going to a 1/2 cup of coffee with 1/2 milk, BIG sacrifice for me

That being said, I've cut out caffeine completely. No caffeine is literally the worst.

  • Thats how everyone knew i was pregnant when i went from 6 cups a day to none im a freaking zombie now
  • I had about 3 cups a day before i learned of my pregancy! After a week of horrible headaches, I started mixing decaf and regular. It has helped! (Please keep in mind decaf still has caffeine, just a good amount less) By doing this, I can safely have two cups and still leave room for my chocolate!!!
  • Coffee is actually the only thing I've found that helps control my constipation X_X. I only have a cup once or twice a week. This is a side note, but if anyone else has figured out a better way to deal with the slow digestion... please share.
  • Oh, also, here's a helpful link I use when I'm unsure of a certain drink's caffeine content. https://www.babycenter.com/caffeine-during-pregnancy?page=2

I used to have 3/4 cups a day of strong coffee. I've now brought it down to 1 cup a day, sometimes 1 1/2, but of the weakest possible available. I've found out that I don't crave as much as before either so it's working well for me.

  • I'm so proud of myself! I've gone from 2 cups/day to almost no coffee. I've probably had 5 cups of coffee total since I found out. It's a MIRACLE! I LOVE iced coffee but since they don't offer it decaf the lady at Starbucks suggested I try Iced Decaf Vanilla Americano with Cream and that's what I'm stuck on if I do go.
