Glyburide?

Hello fellow mommies, so this is baby #3 for me and DH, and I just tested positive for gestational diabetes at 18 weeks, I had it with my first pregnancy but not with my second weirdly. Anyway, my doctor is already talking about putting me on oral medicine, glyburide in specific. I never took anything with my first pregnancy and ended up gaining a whopping 130 lbs during my pregnancy! DD was born 2+ weeks early at 9lbs 4 oz, and the labor was awful and agonizing because she was too big and got stuck so obviously I'm willing to do anything to prevent anything like that happening again, but I've gotten mixed reviews online about glyburide and wanted to know if any of you had been on it before, are on it now, or know anyone else who's taken it??

Re: Glyburide?

  • I took it last pregnancy. Just be careful because it's a very slow acting drug so if you don't eat enough your sugar will drop. My Dr at first prescribed too much and is get 50s. It was awful. But my baby was born at 39 weeks very healthy 7 lbs 15 oz

  • I had type 2 when i found out i was pregnant they put me on it almost immediately.  i have read a lot about it and read more positive than negative.  Its true its a slow acting drug, try not to do sugar but carbs almost every meal.  sugar throws everything off.  If you do go on it make sure you snack in between meals so you dont hit a low...it is the worst feeling ever.
  • I took glyburide for about 2 weeks, it didn't work well enough for me. Mine was prescribed by maternal fetal medicine, whom I trust.

Thanks ladies!! Makes me feel a bit better knowing it's a more common medicine, and you all haven't had any harmful effects on your babies. I managed to barely pass my 3 hour glucose test, after failing the 1 hour, so they're making me redo the 3 hour in a month but I'm hoping I will get lucky this pregnancy and avoid GD all together!
