What would you do if you hated your doctor?

First off I should say I don't hate my doctor, I hate the doctor who is taking over for her while she is gone on maternity leave.
Since I was TTC my real doctor gave me advice, support, suggestions and was excited for me. However I got pregnant just as she left and this new doctor is just awful.
She wouldn't let me come in to confirm my pregnancy, refused to see me until I was 14 weeks along and that would only be to answer my questions, not even refer me to an OB.
She wouldn't let me do my bloodwork now so that it is all ready at my first appointment.
This is how she seems to want to do things
14 Weeks- See me for the first time to answer questions
16 Weeks - Have first Ultrasound (Not done by her, being done at a hospital)
20 Weeks- Refer me to a an OB

What kind of doctor doesn't think its important to see a first time pregnant lady twice in the first first 2 trimesters of pregnancy?
What would you do? Since this is just a fill in for my real doctor I am not going to find another doctor. I was thinking maybe just going to the hospital? Is it normal to have so little medical care?
I know my real doctor would have had me in every 4-6 weeks through the first trimester then refer me to an OB for the second and third.
Help!!

Re: What would you do if you hated your doctor?

  • I'm seeing a nurse at eight weeks for intake but I'm not seeing my midwife until 12 weeks. I feel like I won't see her again until 4-6 weeks later so the time line doesn't seem to be that off. BUT if you don't like your doctor get a new one! This experience should be joyful and you should feel supported 100% of the time. If you're not happy with the care leave. There are plenty of good Drs and midwives out there!! Good luck.

  • I had called a highly recommended doc here where I live. They weren't getting me in till close to 10 wks(and they weren't even doing an ultrasound), which I didn't like. Called another office that came recommended from a friend. I would ask some close friends who have had kids, and see if there is anyone they recommend. I won't be delivering here, and this will be my second baby. So I just needed someone to give me the medical care. I'm glad I switched bc I started with morning sickness this morning and my appointment is only a week a way vs a whole month. You could always switch till she gets back from leave. Just ask for a copy of your medical records.

I would find my own OB. Ask friends, look on Health Grades for OBs with a good rating. Then call and make an appointment. You don't have to wait for the dr you are seeing now. I would move on. Most OBs do an NT scan at 12 weeks, 20 weeks would be too late for it.
I also see a nurse practitioner at 8 weeks, then dr at 12 weeks where I'll have an NT scan.

    Good luck!
  • I would be looking for a new ob
This time us already stressful enough to stick with a dr you going feel comfortable with

  • I would be looking for a new Dr.  Especially if this is your first.  I feel like I have a million questions, and would want to see someone who is willing to let me come in, even if it isn't "medically necessary".

    Good luck!

  • Agreed! Look for someone new! My doctor's office is seeing me at almost 9 weeks for my first ultrasound then I will have appointments every four weeks for a while until I get closer to delivery then I'll go more often.
  • Bottom line, if you don't feel comfortable with the care you are receiving it's your choice to find someone new.

Timeline wise, seeing your Dr. only every 4 weeks is pretty typical though not coming in until 14 weeks seems pretty late.

With my 2 previous pregnancies I didn't see my dr. until close to 11 weeks and didn't have an ultrasound until the anatomy scan at 20. I did see a nurse around 8 for blood work, info and questions.
Echoing a PP if you are choosing to do the nuchal scan I believe they want to do those closer to 12 weeks.

I would have no problem finding someone different and returning to my Dr after she returns if I felt there were real personality differences or concerns with the care I was receiving.

I would find somebody new. The practice I'm with you have an ultrasound and meet with a nurse practitioner at 9 weeks. Then it's every 4 weeks, alternating between nurse practitioner and the doctor. I can't believe you won't get an ultrasound until 14 weeks!!

  • Definitely look for another doctor. My primary doc referred me to an OB as soon as she confirmed my pregnancy with a urine test.
All the best that you don't have to deal with the one you don't like for too long!
  • I would definitely call a local OB. I found mine by reading reviews online and she kicks butt! I'm the first of my friends to have kids so it took some work to find a good OB but now that I have her, I'm so glad. I'll be having my first ultrasound at 6 weeks. Good luck, and definitely get in to see a different doc soon!

I agree with PP that once a month is normal in the earlier stages of pregnancy, but 14 weeks seems late for the first appointment. If I were you, I'd go ahead and find an OB since you will need to switch over anyway.
  • Look for an ob on your own, but please know that my ob with my first didn't want to see me until 14 wks either. That's not uncommon. With my second, I wasn't having periods yet so they got me in right away for a dating u/s and decided I was 7 wks. With this little one, I won't be seen until 10 weeks. I don't care for the practice of not seeing new first-time mom's until well into the first tri or until the 2nd tri, but it is pretty commonplace.

Thank you for the responses. I really wish I could find an OB on my own, but in my province you can't just call and make an appointment, a GP has to refer you to one.
I called my clinic and kind of demanded an earlier appointment and luckily the receptionist felt bad and gave me one next week even though its only to ask questions. I think I will just have to be a little more demanding from now on and not just accept what they tell me.
