Chorionic Hematoma?

Hi, mommies! I'm Laura, 26 years old, and am 6 weeks pregnant with hubby and I's first baby (6 wks by LMP, 4 wks since conception). Our EDD is the 20th of Dec.. Christmas baby! :)

About 5 days ago, they found a small 7mm subchorionic hematoma in my uterus. The doc thinks it was formed during implantation and should hopefully reabsorb itself. I'm now resting (not working, as I'm a yoga instructor and should avoid intense physical activities) and will have a repeat ultrasound in 2 weeks.

This is supposed to be common but I'm nervous. Anyone been through this before? TIA!

Re: Chorionic Hematoma?

  • I had one last pregnancy that wasn't found until it ruptured. I began bleeding and was convinced it was all over. But we go to the ER and, after a stare down with a very young resident I got an ultrasound. Two little beans, kicking the crap out of each other. They were perfectly fine.
I think it's usually just a big problem if it is in a place it can interfere with the other placenta. Good luck, and try to rest.

  • I have a coworker who had to go on bedrest for about two months from about 12 w to 20weeks but she just gave birth two weeks ago to a healthy baby girl!!
  • Hi. I'm also Laura :). I have one too, about a centimeter and it's caused quite a bit of spotting. It's making me crazy anxious even though we've seen the heartbeat. I'm right there with you

We said goodbye to our sweet Taylor Ashley on August 8, 2012.We lost baby Noelle on May 1, 2015

Mom to Cam and Al, now expecting baby number 3, August 2016. Praying for lots of sticky baby dust!
  • Had a large one with my first. Had no issues, not even bleeding, it reabsorbed by my 20w US and he's about to be 6.
  • I'm Katie...I'm 7weeks2 days with our first baby and I too have this :( I was told no vigorous exercise for two weeks and then we go back for another ultrasound. She said hopefully it will re absorb..fingers crossed!
  • Yay! I'm so encouraged to see that at least all of you here who have had this went on to have healthy babes! :) But yeah, Katie and Laura, glad we're going through this together right now! It's really nerve racking.. We havent seen our baby's HB yet because I was barely at 5wks during the ultrasound. Praying that we do see it on our 8wk one! And I'll also I'll be praying that our hematomas get reabsorbed. I hear that with rest and care, that's the most common outcome, so here's hoping! :)

I can tell you we see this A LOT in ultrasound. There was one hospital I worked at where we were told not to put it in the report if it was tiny. Only to document it if it was significant. (to make sure moms don't worry about something that they shouldn't.. According to the rad)
I think the word "hematoma" freaks out a lot of people... It sounds like a scary word but it's really not. It's a collection of old blood that, like you said, likely formed at implantation

  • I have this too! I'm choosing to think that I have a strong little embryo if it can bruise me at this stage! After bleeding at six weeks, there was a little flicker (heartbeat) at the ultrasound. Go back next week for the next week, but the doctor was super optimistic and haven't had any significant bleeding in two days.

My sister had the same thing at six weeks with her first, and her babe is now a four year old firecracker!
  • Just found out I also have one! He didn't tell me how large it was or anything. I am going back in 12 days for first OB appt and 4 weeks for another ultrasound.

He mostly told me so that when I start spotting from it that it should be ok but just to give him a call.

I'm sorry you're going through this! I'm a yoga instructor too :) Can you teach without demoing too much? that might help you keep your mind off of things.

I had one with my daughter...and now she is 1! This type of thing is very common (about 50% of pregnancies). It is super scary to have bleeding but just try to keep calm....being stressed affects baby! I also have one now in this pregnancy! I am due 12/3! There is so much prepping you body does for baby that people don't talk about! There are a ton of new blood vessels and connections happening that spotting is very common!! If you have more questions just message me!

  • Ok so, has anyone had bright red bleeding with their hematoma's? I'm currently bleeding bright red. Called the ER OB and got very little advice on what to do/what to expect.
  • @vmatt850- my bleeding was bright red. And it sure did seem like a hell of a lot. Go get some rest, feet up, stay hydrated. That's what they told me. And contact your personal doctor.
  • Yes! I will absolutely do all of the above. It seems like these things only happen outside of office hours. Ugh.
  • @Beckah31 did you also have some on and off very mild cramping? I have suuuuper slight cramping that I wouldn't think twice about if I wasn't also bleeding.
  • I don't remember making the connection, but I had a lot of cramping with the twins- mostly because they liked to play MMA in my uterus. My bleed didn't show until around 8 or 9 weeks, and the cramping had gotten slightly better than it had been around 5 or 6 weeks, but I honestly don't remember.
Have you called your doctor? If not tonight, definitely first thing in the morning.
  • Well, I called the office but, he's obviously not in so I left a message. And I definitely won't wait for him to return my call, I will just call first thing tomorrow morning. If it gets any worse I will go to the ER and beg for an ultrasound if necessary!

  • Had this with baby #1 from 6-15 weeks. Very scary, but it did reabsorb. Now have a happy, healthy 2 year old :)
Dx with PCOS in 2004; TTC #1 since 2006. 6 failed rounds of Clomid, 1 failed round of injectibles, innumerable failed cycles of herbs, accupuncture, etc. FINALLY got BFP on 10/4/2012 after 2 rounds of Femara Can't wait to be a mommy! Pregnancy Ticker
  • Mine was diagnosed at 10 weeks last October after I had bright red bleeding. I lost the baby at 14 weeks because blood is an irritant and basically sent my body into labor. That was my first pregnancy and now I am 7 weeks with pregnancy 2. Best of luck, I know how scary the bleeding is. I hope the best for you and your babies!
  • I had the same thing on Monday, yet my doctors didn't use fancy words but this sounds like what I have: I have been spotting, what he called dried blood for the past two days. I am not to exercise or have sex until my next appointment and only if I have "period blood" did he say I am to call him.

Did you have any bleeding with it?
  • anyone having some cramping/back pain with the SCH as it is bleeding/spotting?

I think maybe this is what I have! When I went in this week for bleeding and cramping they said "oh I see some blood" but then never mentioned it again. Kind of like blood in the uterus wasn't a big deal at all. I'm going to ask on Monday at my next scan.
  • @CMDD it seems to be a lot more common than the statistics say! Do you have some cramping and back pain associates with your bleeding? I would think if they "saw some blood" it would mean a bit of a clot. Like, please, don't elaborate! Lol. It can be frustrating when they're so laid back and we are so nervous! My DH keeps telling me to stop over analyzing every twinge and ache but it's suuuuuuuper tough to ignore that when I'm still spotting a bit.

@vmatt850 no back pain. but lots of cramping. like a period. The dr said she expected to see nothing in there and was surprised that everything looked good. like she mustve said 3-5 times that my placenta was huge and healthy looking. lol.

I'm beginning to think this is what I have. I've had spotting all week, with some passing of tissue. But my levels are within normal rising levels and OB said there's no concern for now. They're not taking me in again for another week and a half for my 1st appt and ultrasound. I may die from anxious waiting.
  • @chiboo9 i hear you!! 6 more days of anxiety until my next appt and US! like i said, they seem to be way more common than the statistics say. maybe because more and more of us are realizing our losses so early and then go in for early ultrasounds nowadays? stats say 1-3% of women get SCH's but i feel like, just from this board, there are already more than 1-3%!

@CMDD from what i've read, all of it seems normal! the back pain, cramps, varying intensity of bleeding... none of it is exactly comforting though! ugh!
