3rd Trimester

difference between discharge and leaking water

I will be 30 weeks Monday and for the passed 2-3 days I have been having a lot more discharge. Over these passed few days the, what I'm guessing to be, discharge has gotten where it happens more. I'm just a little unsure of what it could actually be, as this was a all of a sudden kind of thing, and I don't want to freak out over nothing. So, my question is how do you tell the difference between just discharge or your water leaking? I wear panty liners and for these few days it's gotten to happen so much I change about 4 or more times a day. Sometimes it feels as if I've peed myself a little bit. My doctor doesn't see any patients on Fridays, and I would just like to get some opinions from other who may have experienced this or like this before, before I just go to the hospital. I've also had this weird popping in my lower stomach and a lot more back pain, which started just before having the change In discharge.

I'm 40 weeks, was in the hospital earlier this week as my discharge changed again and I was so close to due date I wondered if it was my water.

I will say since about 27 weeks I've been wearing panty liners and either changing my underwear or panty liner multiple times a day. Some days I had so much discharge it felt like I peed my pants a little. Honestly, it's probably a combination of normal discharge and drips of urine.

  • I was in the hospital last week at 31.5 weeks for contractions. I asked them how I would know the difference between broken water and discharge because sometimes mine is so much I have to change my underwear. She told me it would be enough that if I didn't have underwear on it would trickle down my legs. And it wouldn't stop.

29 weeks, stm lurker here. Last pregnancy I was told its your water if you fill a pad in an hour. Not a liner but an actual pad. Also last pregnancy I had a premature rupture. The bag if water didn't break like how Its seen on movies, nor was I dialated more than a cm. Anyway I leaked water and it was every time I peed. Just a trickle like I couldn't stop peeing.

Right now its more than likely discharge, sweat, and a little pee. But if you are really concerned a trip to labor and delivery will help you get some peace of mind.

  • I am 34+5 and having a lot of discharge also. I am changing panties up to 3 times a day and pads twice a day. I was just checked last week for it and the doctor said for some women it is completely normal. He said if it was my water the consistency would change and there would more than likely be a slight change in the smell.
  • This is gross but amniotic fluid will usually smell sweet.  It's gross to actually smell it but that's a lot of the time how they tell you to tell the difference.  Urine won't smell that way and discharge usually won't either.

I've had premature rupture as well and it didn't break all at one. I was almost 20 weeks and I had a trickle.. then another trickle.. then it broke.  It definitely does not feel like you're peeing.  I could tell the difference. I was just standing there and it trickled down my leg.  If you're really freaked out about it though.. I would just go to triage. That's what they're there for!! And they won't be able to tell you if you call.. you'd have to actually go in and they will do a paper test to see if it's amniotic fluid.  Likely it isn't but i'm with you.. it's hard to tell sometimes.

I have had a ton of discharge.. I'll be 36 weeks tomorrow.. mine is not at all watery though.  Nothing I've ever worn a pad or a liner for.

  • I was going to add that when your water breaks it is thin and clear (or clearish-pink), like water :) Whereas discharge is generally thicker.

  • I've also had sum discharge thinkin I've weed a little keep goin to toilet n checking also having to wear liners which I've Neva done before . 32 + wks x
  • My water broke on its own with my first two. It feels different, and likely run down your leg. I leak urine all the time with this pregnancy, I can feel the bladder contacting when that happens. My discharge while annoying is much thicker and the odor is frustrating.
  • Keep an eye out for irritation! Yeast infections are common in pregnancy, but more than likely you're just experiencing some extra discharge for all those extra hormones.
