What are you ladies doing to prepare your body for labor and delivery? I have been doing yoga throughout my pregnancy and I want to start kegel exercises and start perineum massage. Any experience with perineum massage?
No experience but I will be starting that soon with oil. I figure it can't hurt and midwife recommends it. She suggests olive oil. I'm on team squats over kegels based on my readings

I have been doing squats. My yoga instructor said squats help with the annoying vaginal cramping that is different then BH.
Friend said her sister used primrose oil & had no tearing. Chiropractor is starting excercises this week for labor!
I hope no tearing happens. I want an all natural childbirth but the tearing terrifies me. I made my birth plan and told my doctor to numb that area is I start to tear or if he has to do it. He recommended the perineum massage to help prevent tearing.
We just took a labor and delivery massage class last night and our instructor showed (via a diagram) my husband how to do it. She recommended using coconut oil, or anything cold pressed. Basically the idea is to use downward pressure to stretch the perineum to an almost painful point and then hold. After holding for a while, you should feel it release a little, almost like a muscle stretch. This way, as you are pushing baby out, you are "used" to that feeling and you can know how far you can push without tearing and as it slowly stretches baby will move further out. She gave a really good analogy to "breathe" the baby out as opposed to "pushing" out. Don't know if any of that made sense, but I thought I'd relay what we learned
I am interested in that! My down there is reallllly sore when I walk or if I sit indian style then try to cross it over. Man...it bugs the heck outta of me :-(
I started trying to do it last night. I had my hubby do it but he was rather ineffective because he wouldn't stop giggling and was confused. He's at a meeting tonight, so I just tried myself. I can't get to it! My belly is in the way and I can't reach where I need to! I'm very frustrated. If anyone has any tips, I would be willing to listen!
It is hard to get into the right position to be able to reach down there properly! Best position for me is propped up in bed on several pillows, so kind of slightly reclining. I had trouble reaching down there too over my belly!! But if I hunched forward I could reach ok. Not the most comfy and I found my hands cramping up, but DH was pretty useless for me too, and I think it's more effective if I do it. Also, using a mirror helps a lot too. Even if the view isn't so lovely...
Re: Preparation Via Perineum Massage
Guess I should look into this. A friend had a class 4 tear...which is terrifying!
