Experience with Cholestasis?

I have what my dr kept saying was PUPPS for over a month now and even me telling them it's different, it's worse, I'm miserable, can it be something else? They finally just heard me yesterday and rushed me for lab work. She strongly believes I've got the cholestasis now and after reading the definition and symptoms online, I feel like it has to be the answer! Everything fits. I'm so upset that all this time has passed with no monitoring and the baby is the one at risk not even me really. She's waiting to see one result but I'm 38 weeks wed so she said well just induce, I'm already at a 3 and it's my 3rd so it shouldn't be too hard to get things going.

Sorry for the long vent/rant! I'm just so overwhelmed, upset, frustrated, and scared!

I have it! Was diagnosed at 30 weeks now 37 weeks. They're inducing me next week. Try not to worry there's a lot of scary stories online so just don't google (some people love to scare others I'm sure)!!!! As long as your baby is moving as normal and you've not felt a decrease then baby should be fine. I'm on medication but the main thing they told me to keep an eye on is baby's movements. One of the doctors at the hospital told me that it's very rare now that any harm will come to baby from it as they induce around 38 weeks and the danger zone is mainly if you go over due and are unaware that you have it. Try not to worry, they should have tested for it sooner but at least they're listening now! Just means you will meet your baby sooner :) good luck!!!

I am in the same exact position as you! I started itching like crazy this past weekend. I was 37 weeks on Saturday. Called the doctor and she had me come in yesterday to rush bloodwork. Of course it will take almost a week for the bile count to come back so she has me going in tomorrow for another NST and to discuss induction before the results come back. Induction was definitely not in my birth plan but if it's what keeps the baby safe then it's what has to be done. IMO the bile count should be done on all pregnant women but let's be happy we caught it in time! Best of luck to you with your induction!!
  • I got intense itching 6 weeks ago and have had that plus burning since then. His movement has decreased but there are still movements. I'm really aggravated I could've been on meds this whole time and could've been up and functioning much more than being in bed soo much. It's horrible at night so then even when I get relief during the day I'm so exhausted.

So, I was itchy at night on my leg for only 2 nights and it has not happened since then- am I current in the assumption that this itchy would keep up if it were cholestasis? I honestly thought it was a bug or something that maybe my dog brought in so I did a ton of laundry cleaned the carpets of my bedroom for I only had itched those two times at night or maybe just dry skin from all the sun they are not used to getting. Just wondering what your thoughts were-

  • I'm now super parinoid I have this. I have had intense itchiness on the bottom of my feet my entire pregnancy and then my legs sometimes but I also have a skin condition on the tops of my feet and and elbows that causes itchiness so I thought it was the same thing and never mentioned it to my doctor. Now I'm super parinoid that I have this instead.
  • No it's intense like I've scratched raw spots on my legs and feet from itching too much/hard. And mine burns and hurts also. PUPPS can be pregnancy related itching also. It's not quite as bad but yes it will continue and for me it progresses through out my body

When I first noticed it I mentioned it to my midwife cause I thought it was unusual to have itchy bottoms of your feet, the itching wasn't that bad then but my levels were ridiculously high! If I hadn't of mentioned it to the midwife I wouldn't of known!
Now 7 weeks later I can't sleep because of the itching and I also have PUPPS. Just ring your doctor or midwife and explain to them over the phone and they'll tell you if they think it needs checking. Try not to stress and worry everyone, were nearly ready to meet our babies!! :)

I got my ALT and AST numbers back today and they're actually very low which means I do not have cholestasis. Coincidentally tonight has been the worst yet for my itching though. I'm still not 100% satisfied bc I want to know what is causing this extreme itching and of course make sure it's nothing to harm the baby. The doctor wants me to continue with the NSTs as long as the itching continues and I may request a second blood test to make sure the results were accurate. Better safe than sorry!
