Still can't hear heartbeat @ 13w

I had a normalultrasound at 10 weeks for dating but could not hear heartbeat at 11 weeks or today (13w2d) so we are having an ultrasound tomorrow.

Anyone else in the same boat, having a hard time finding heartbeat?

Re: Still can't hear heartbeat @ 13w

  • I had a chek up yesterday, 13wks also, they found the heartbeat but she had to search a while to get it. Could they hear the baby move at all? Praying you see your lil one wiggling all over and it was just being stubborn!

  • Were you able to see the heartbeat on the monitor during the ultrasound?

They had a very difficult time finding the heartbeat at my 12 week appointment with the doppler.  Sprout was hiding in the far left corner not terribly far from my hip bone.  The dr. had to push pretty hard on what felt like muscle/ligaments in order to find it and I'm a pretty skinny gal.  If you're a little bigger it can be that much harder.

Yes we did see heartbeat on ultrasound. Thanks!

Thw midwife tried for quite a while at appointment 2 weeks ago. The dr. today didn't try too hard (in comparison). I'm thin but she said it wasn't uncommon at this age but we heard my son's heartbeat right away at every appointment starting at 8 weeks so it's just nerve-wracking.

Did they mention if your uterus is tilted at all? That can also make it harder to find with the Doppler.

  • ^^  My uterus is tilted which is one of the reasons it's difficult to find the heartbeat on me.

Hmmm, they haven't mentioned it this pregnancy or last.
  • Was this a vaginal or abdominal ultrasound? Vaginal can detect it as early as late into 5 weeks, but abdominal can have issues depending on uterus shape, placenta placement, etc.

While we were easily able to hear a heartbeat at 13w with my midwife, our ultrasound technician had a hell of a time getting the baby to stay still to get accurate everything during our IPS scan. I am very glad that you were able to hear the heartbeat though. That must be a huge relief.
  • My office doesn't even try until 12/13 weeks because they said it can be hard to find it before then and I'm assuming they don't want moms more stressed out. So it might be the position of the baby or just a little too early.
  • I think as long as you're seeing the heartbeat on the ultra sound and the heart rate is normal, you'll be good to go.  Your little bugger may just be hiding from the sonar.  lol.

Doctor couldn't find my LOs heartbeat yesterday via doppler, so she did a quick US and the baby was flipping and wiggling around. Heartbeat looked good so she didn't have any concerns. It can be hard to find the heartbeat when they're still so small. Don't worry!

My midwife told me that the heartbeat can't be picked up until week 15 so I won't hear anything until then even if they tried? X

It depends on the person.  After some trying they were able to find a heartbeat on the doppler for me at 12 weeks.  It really is difficult to find on some women and they really pressed hard on me.  I was tender in the area she eventually found it for the rest of the day from her pushing the scanner into my side.

  • At my 12 week visits they always warn me it can take a while to find the heart beat as baby is so small still. That being said the OB would check for heart beat on ultrasound machine if he didn't hear it right away at the appt. I would try not to worry.
  • My doctor was able to find mine pretty easily at my 12.5 week appointment. But like other posters mentioned we are all shaped differently. Ask for a vaginal US next time. Sometimes you just need a visual for a piece of mind. Best of luck!

It took my doctor a good 3-4 minutes to find the heartbeat during my 12 week appointment. She reassured me that it was normal and can take some time and patience when the baby is still so small. Sending positive thoughts your way!
