Pregnant after 35

Do I really need special baby laundry detergent?

DH and I already use sensitive skin, dye free, perfume free, hypoallergenic detergent and dryer sheets for our own clothes.  What's so special about the baby stuff (except for the exorbitant price?)  Can I just use the sensitive skin detergent and dryer sheets that we already have?  Thanks!

Re: Do I really need special baby laundry detergent?

  • Other than the exorbitant price? The fact that they can actually sell people on this kind of silliness these days. Our parents and grandparents would have scoffed at it, noting that their parents and grandparents did the wash by hand with no special anything. For some reason people these days are so willing to fall for any advertisement. It's sad.

Don't forget, when our grandparents washed everything by hand, they did use much gentler soap. But, saying that, we didn't use any special detergent for our newborn. If you're already using something that is for sensitive skin, you certainly don't need baby flavor.

Agree. I think when DD was born I was using the sensitive dye fee Tide and that was fine. I will say though, when she was 3 months old we were visiting MIL and did a load of laundry with regular detergent and she broke out as soon as those clothes touched her! Around 1-11/2 I went back to regular detergent and she was fine.
  • I personally think any detergent for sensitive skin and/allergies is just fine. I have extra sensitive skin and pretty much all detergent give me contact dermatitis. So I have resorted to making my own detergent which I am not allergic too!! And is cloth diaper safe, as we are cloth diapering and gets my families clothes cleaner than anything else we have tried, and does not wave a residue on the clothes. So I am using that for baby as well.

  • No. lol You definitely do not!  I never buy that stuff.  I just buy free and clear.. whatever brand is on sale usually.  I use it for everyone.  Dreft is crazy expensive.  I think Target has a baby detergent that's cheaper but I think free and clear is the same thing anyways!

My 1st had incredibly sensitive skin. Our pediatrician recommended All Free and Clear (said it was better than Dreft) and she didn't have any problems with it.
  • We use Norwex detergent. And I think it should be fine for babies. I would recommend using dryer sheets though. They are very unhealthy for everyone! Read about it online. I use rubber dryer balls instead.

Thanks, all!  I am so glad to hear that I don't need to buy super-expensive fancy baby detergent!  I think I will start washing stuff this week.

  • No you don't need anything special.  Do you need to even use the sensitive free and clear stuff .... most likely no.  Some babies will have such sensitive skin or allergies or whatever that they will need the free and clear...but for the majority of babies, they will not.

Your baby will be laying against your shirt.  They will be laid in your bed, etc.  They will come into contact with all sorts of laundry, therefore you just don't need special detergent for their laundry.

For sensitive kids free and clear is more mild than baby detergent which is totally loaded with fragrances.

I generally make all my own laundry detergent because it is so cheap to do.  With the amount of laundry I do, other detergents really add up.  Its very gentle and cleans well...I can attest to that with all the children...especially boys...I have.  I do keep some Tide around for some laundry that has special issues....chocolate ice cream set in or blood etc.  Tide, although loaded with chemicals, really can remove anything!!

Agree any free and clear detergent should do. No need for dryer sheets - I don't use them on anyone's clothes - so many chemicals! I use aluminum foil balls for the dryer and it works great (thx Pinterest!)

  • A friend of mine strongly recommends original tide, since that's what was used in the NICU when she had a micropreemie.
