Natural induction options

Hey ladies, I'm 39 weeks tomorrow and SERIOUSLY considering trying some ol wives tales to induce naturally. I know, I know, just let baby come on his own, but my husband is on board, my doc is fine with it, and I won't hurt myself so why not give a few a go. I'm thinking of sex, eating a pineapple or two, and maybe trying out my pump. I know nothing will happen if my body isn't ready so I don't see a lot of harm. I'm not looking for a lecture just wondering if anyone else has given it a go or is thinking about it. If so what are you planning to try or refuse to try?

Re: Natural induction options

  • I refuse to ever drink castor oil again. I tried it with my DD & it was so not worth it. Didn't do anything. SO & I have been having sex like crazy trying to get things moving. Walking.

  • I'll be 39 wks tomorrow, also. And all the suggestions I've been given is sex and walking.
  • I'm 2 days over due and doing lots of walking and sex when we manage but it can be so uncomfortable!!
  • Be careful with nipple stimulation. It can sometimes bring on strong BH that makes you think you're having contractions 8-> my ute tightened for like 20 mins straight. That hurt!!
  • Raspberry leaf tea and evening primrose oil capsules have also been known to help!

I'm drinking my red raspberry relief tea, inserting EPO, sex, I ate a pineapple last night, and bouncing on my ball. I go to my 38 week appointment on Wednesday and will see if I have any progression! I was given the green light at my 37 week appointment for trying these things. We will see!
  • Pineapples and sex aren't going to hurt you. In fact both are pretty awesome in my book lol.

    Baby boy #2 due 5/6/15
  • I love that I'm not alone! Thank you all for sharing your methods. I'm certainly going to try the tea and look for evening primrose oil. I'm sure the sex will be uncomfortable but I'm so willing to give it a go. I have Castro oil at home but I'm scared to try it so it'll be last on my list. Let us know if any of these work for you!
  • Be careful with nipple stimulation like pp said. I tried this just last night and all it did was give me horrible random Braxton hicks contractions and made me feel very nauseas. But it could work for you, just don't go in blind.

  • My sister is an OB and sent me a care pkg of Raspberry Leaf tea to start drinking 3 times a day, now that I'm almost 37wks. I've been drinking it for 3 days now and it def brings on contractions! If your baby is ready, it can kickstart labor. Regardless, it tones your uterus and helps labor go faster. I'm planning to start nipple stimulation with the pump next week. I know for sure that works. Just don't overdo it on that method.
  • Nice thread. I am also starting red rasBerry tea and evening primrose oil. 37 wks today and was told if nothing by 39 wk on 18th they wanna induce due to my age!! :( so I'll try just about anything to get things moving. Sex tonigHt as well. Appt on wed so we will see if anything helps

I see that a lot of people recommend walking.. I find if I'm on my feet for 15 minute my feet to my knees double in size and hurt!! Any suggestions to get swelling down?

I'm 3 days overdue and have been trying everything for 1.5 weeks with no luck. I have another week before they'll induce me. :(
  • lots of sex, but by sex we mean ORGASM. The rush of oxytocin is what you really want! Semen serves as a prostaglandin, but the oxytocin rushes are gold for labor! So if it's so uncomfortable that you can't get into it, I'd skip it.
  • Also, try sitting in a squatting position throughout the day, on a stool or birthing ball. It puts the appropriate pressure on your cervix.
  • I have tried it all with no prevail
  • Be careful. Mayo Clinic says caster oil makes you have awful & painful diarrhea & your baby too. It can lead to respiratory issues for your kiddo. That's the ONLY reason I haven't done it!
  • I've tries everything but raspberry leaf tea (I cant find it anywhere and I'm too impatient to order it online), EPO (MW recommended I don't because my cervix is ripe, but just won't dialte) or castor oil (I don't want to shit my brains out for no reason). The only thing that even gives me BH is walking.
  • Tonight is a full moon.  Old Wives tale is that during a full moon more women go into labor if they are close to their delivery date.  :)
  • Nice to know about the full moon! Bring it on!

Castor oil can be scary. My midwifes were ok with it but wanted a heads up if I was going to try it because it can cause baby to poop, which can be a dangerous no-no. If they know you've taken it they can watch for that. I tried it twice with my first and got nowhere so I think that's out for me. I am eating pineapple as I type this though!

I tried my breast pump and got nowhere with that either. Then I read that studies show that you need really extensive nipple stimulus for it to work - like an hour at a time, 3 times a day! I don't think my nipple have it in them!

Every time I ride in a car contractions start. Sex helps you dilate and softens your cervix as long as he cums inside you and even better if you orgasm. I was in preterm labor for 4 days before we stopped it but now I'm feeling pretty ready. Squats, walking, and spicy foods did nothing for me. Bring on the fresh pineapple, evening primrose oil (one oral one vaginal), nipple stimulation, and sex!
  • 39 week appointment and I'm 1.5 dialated and 0 effaced. Still pretty thick according to my doc. So my focus is on my cervix. I'm still debating on Casto oil, haven't ruled it out. Keep the ideas coming!
  • Where do you ladies get the raspberry tea?

The organic isle in my grocery store had it.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that it has to be the pineapple core, not the part you would typically eat
  • My OB stripped my membranes today. That was fun...
  • I was hoping to get my membranes striped yesterday but I'm not progressed enough. Doc said at 40 weeks she'd do it. I'm hoping trying some of these ideas will help me move along.
  • I'm in the same boat. Im 39 weeks and I feel like I've tried everything (primrose oil, pineapple, raspberry leaf tea, walking), everything but sex. My husband is too nervous about it at this late in the pregnancy! Ugh! I'm starting to feel like she will Never come out! It's so frustrating!
  • And to be clear it is Raspberry LEAF tea... its an herbal tea that is made from raspberry leaves. Not the green tea that is flavored with raspberries. Just want to make sure all reading know what we are talking about. The only place Ive had luck is Wegman's here in Pennsylvania, USA. But I know there are other small health stores around, im not sure where there are though.
