Another post about pain and doctors offices

FTM, so excuse any freakouts..

i just got off the phone with a nurse at my dr. office...I'm confused by what she told me and felt like she was just trying to pass me off, and didn't want to help me. I told her "I've had a sharp pain in my right side since last night, off and on. I could hardly walk up the hill to my car..It woke me up at 3 am and I had to breathe deeply and rub it to make it subside, and fell back asleep. It's still a dull ache right now but comes back sharp, then goes away again. I feel like it could be gas, but I'm worried." She didn't really say anything but "go to labor and delivery, they'll take care of you there."

I'm sorry, what?! Am...am I in labor? so, I'm confused. Should I go to labor and delivery, or go to the ER? I feel silly going to L&D if I'm only 19w 3d.. What if it's nothing? Im not in pain now, so shoudn't my doctor be the first one to see me and THEN say go to L&D so I don't make unnecessary trips? Or am I completely wrong? I feel like they don't want to help... halp?!

Re: Another post about pain and doctors offices

  • Sorry they aren't being helpful. They should be there to answer any question and get to the bottom of what's going on. I had a similar experience (pain wise) last week at 21 weeks I had 3 separate really sharp pains in my right side and then I was really really sore the rest of the day. I was really worried too. The nurse on the phone told me babies can go through a growth spurt between 18-21 weeks and that may be contributing to the pain. She also said it could be my alignment, like I took a wrong step or something. She said to make sure I had good inserts in my shoes to support my arches and a pillow between my knees at night. Not sure what yours is but this is what they told me. Can you call again and see if you get another nurse?

  • did she say 'go to labor and delivery' or did she say 'if it concerns you, you could go to labor and delivery' ?

If it's the first, then go to labor and delivery.  If she said the second, it's up to you if you want to go.

What kind of pain is it?  in the rib area? down low and around the sides of your bump like RLP? All across the front and sides?

I'm a FTM, but one spot of sharp pain sounds more like what i get when I have RLP than what i would expect contractions to feel like.

  • She may have said to go to L&D because the doctor's office didn't have any openings and L&D is better equipped to handle any potential issues. I'm sorry she wasn't more clear with you, though.

Don't feel silly about going in to get checked out - they'd rather check you out and tell you it's awful round ligament pain (or whatever it happens to be) than have you feel too silly to go in and not catch a potential problem before it gets serious. Again, I'm not prophesying doom; it's probably a weird presentation of a common pregnancy complaint, and the odds are in your favor that it's not a big deal. For your own peace of mind, though, stop in to L&D and get some reassurance.

    Hope you feel better soon!
  • @abarrientez -I've been doing the pillow between the knees, but I've never been comfortable like that I guess, and kick it out while I sleep..haha

@off2thefunnyfarm - she said 'go to L&D' but they are very rude, and like I said, have a feeling they were trying to pass me off to someone else. It is in the same spot-ish as my RLP, but feels more like a period cramp intensified. I'm going to do some stretching, see if it helps, but if not, I'll do what they told me to do..

    Thanks :)

@Mousemama - I agree. I'm gonna see if it gets really painful again, because right now it's very dull (makes me feel like it's a combo of a growth spurt, and really bad RLP.) But I'm not going to ignore her advice, I'm just going to make sure I need to go. I don't want to make unnecessary trips and have to pay (cuz this month is a little tight budget wise)

Thanks ladies, I appreciate the input :)

  • Good luck and keep us posted!
  • Thanks @Mousemama.

so, i called them back, and asked if my doctor could call me when she had a free minute... she was actually right there, so I talked to her. She had me push around on my belly, breathe deeply, lay on my right side, and chalked it up to extreme RLP, and muscle spasms. She said she was glad I called back.

I told her about the nurse on the phone, and she kind of chuckled, and explained (in confidence) that it turns out that particular nurse is infamous for passing patients off to L&D or the ER. I got mad, but I really, really like my doctor, so I trust her to rectify the situation with the nurse. Needless to say, I'll remember that nurses name, and make sure she is no where near me, my medical records, my child's health, or anything to do with my pregnancy.

Thanks for the help. I'm glad I called them back, and my doctor was right there to talk to me. That's how it should be!

I'm glad you got the situation handled to satisfaction. I agree to just avoid that nurse. There's always that one person, we can't be 100% pleased. Good thing OB nurses aren't L&D nurses so you shouldn't see her for the birth anyway.

  • So glad you could talk to your doctor and that it's nothing really serious!
  • Me too! I'm just still ticked about that dumb nurse. I knew she was trying to give me the run around.

On the plus side, I felt my baby kick me for the first time today! Once I got home from doing my laundry i sat down to read, and baby kicked me 3 times, and then again 2 min later, a little rumble..I'm assuming somersaults.. like doing flips trying to say "Mommy, I'm fine! Relax!" I totally cried.
  • With DS I went to L&D a few times for close observation. It sounds to me like she is concerned and wants the close attention for you in L&D. With that level of attention they will likely see or catch what is going on and with their expertise they will be able to help better.

    Good luck!

I had my first experience with rlp. It felt crazy. I was scared and couldn't help but feel like I was going to miscarry or something. I of course went to the most horrible and dramatic thoughts. I felt a sharp pain down low in my groin area. It went away of course. I laid on my left side and I felt the baby move shortly after so it made me feel so much better. It hasn't been back today. I looked it up and the description was spot on to what I was feeling.

I hope that you can come to ease and find some answers. Don't hesitate to call whoever can help or even go in to talk to someone face to face. Sometimes women can be snappy on the phone when they are busy. Hang in there mama. You and baby will be okay.
