Gastro outbreak

Hey everyone, I had a total idiot of a colleague Come to my baby shower yesterday who just forgot to mention her daughter, herself and her whole household had gastro and were only just getting over it. Now 4 of my guests have it, 3 are in hospital and I'm just kind of sitting back and waiting for it to hit me..

I'm 36 weeks tomorrow, is there any hieghtened risk getting it now or is it just pure discomfort and keeping
Up with hydration? I've started increasing my water intake just to kind of offer some kind of buffer. I've only just been told, it's midnight here and can't contact my GP but will in the morning

Re: Gastro outbreak

  • My hubs had a stomach bug that was making its way around town a couple of weeks back. I ended up not getting it, but I did make sure to drink even more water (hydrating in advance, I guess) and making sure to wash my hands a lot, etc. Good luck

  • Thank you, that's all we can do I guess. This was good practise for how irresponsible and selfish people
Can be about other people and their babies health I guess.
  • Wash your hands constantly!! My husband brings home horrible sicknesses all the time and I rarely get them. I also always try and keep some windows open to get fresh air in and make sure I'm well rested so my body has a better chance of fighting it off. I can't STAND it when sick people go into public places. I know sometimes we can't help it, but really? A party?? Arg.
  • Yes drinks lots of water and maybe up your Vitamin D intake (orange juice). The most important thing is to keep hydrated and contact your OB at the first signs of illness.
  • But depending on the exact virus...usually incubation periods are longer than 12/24 hours. The guests that became sick most likely came to the shower already infected.
  • No clue if you will get it but my immunity has actually improved during pregnancy. I work in a school and for once no stomach bug, viral infections, or fever for 8 months. Just try and get sleep and if you do, obviously up fluid intake.
  • I would take some probiotics. I caught the stomach bug from my kids a couple weeks ago. And it was so bad I had to go to the hospital did fluids and to be monitored b/c I started having contractions. Probiotics will give your gut an extra boost to fight off the stomach bug bacteria.
  • I'm sorry your coworker is such a bonehead - honestly, what are people thinking sometimes? I had the stomach flu a few weeks ago (beginning of my third trimester) - OB just said that if I spiked a fever or couldn't keep fluids down, to come in and get IV fluids. Other than that, to just wait it out and keep hydrated (Gatorade and pedialite were recommended). If you do get it, it absolutely sucks but as long as no fever and you're keeping hydrated, you and baby will be fine.
