Dogs and babies

do you think your dog knows your pregnant? I believe mine does, she cuddles on my stomach and puts her nose to me when the baby kicks.

Re: Dogs and babies

  • I think that they can sense a change. My smaller dogs are very protective over me. Anytime my grandmothers German Shepard comes near me they all freak out. Our lab on the other hand likes to sneak in the bed to cuddle with me during my naps, he is so sweet!

  • I think my dogs know. My little Morkie is extra protective and my medium sized mixed breed is extra cuddly. They both cuddle up near my belly. :-)
  • My cat kept putting his paws on my stomach before I even knew. Animals sense things.
  • My boyfriends chihuahua knows he cuddles my belly and is protective. My black lab on the other hand just turned a year old yesterday and I don't think she realizes cause she still tries to jump up on me and lay on me and is just a big hyper clutz.
  • My best friends dog used to jump up on me but since becoming pregnant he is super calm and loving around me. My cat definitely knows, he lays around my tummy all of the time. I think he knew I was pregnant before I did because he would press on my tummy.
  • My dog does for sure! My Husband is Military and works nights and our dog has become way more sensitive to sounds and stuff since I've been pregnant, among other things like sniffing my bump.
  • My pug loves to cuddle close to me either between my legs under the blankets or right next to my belly. My pit I think knows something changed because he doesn't lay close to my belly anymore. Always at my feet. He's always been protective over me to an extent and that hasn't changed.

I think mine knows for sure! She hangs out in his room and lays all over my belly, which she never did before. If he kicks her, she looks at me with this sad face and moves off!
  • My dogs and cats know. I can see the muscles coiled in my 2yo black lab when he wants so badly to jump on me as my welcome home greeting but he doesn't jump (and if he does, its just into the air, doesn't put his paws on me like he used to). He has also take to laying with his head on my lap right against my bump or on my bump depending on how I am sitting/laying. Both of my cats lay on my belly whenever the dog takes a break. They have also been sleeping on my side of the bed and where I sit on the couch whenever I am not there.

I think they know something is different, but I don't think they know what. My dog snuggles with me more now (she has always been super attached to DH before, and only comes to me if he isn't available!), but I'm fairly sure that it's because my body temperature is a little higher and she likes to be snuggled up next to the warmest person in the room!!
  • I'm pretty sure my dog has no clue. She does get very concerned when I throw up though.

There was a great story at birthing class last night about a patient whose dog brought her a blanket one evening. She called her doula (our class instructor) and said "I think I'm going to go into labor tonight, because my dog has never done that before." Sure enough - she did go into labor that night. Yes,anecdotal, but it says something about animal instinct. I definitely think pets know, even if they don't show it in ways we see.
  • I was an emotional wreck in my first trimester, and it did not help that my border collie shunned me! He is with me most of the day, every day - going to work with me a good bit. Before we ever had a positive test, he started completely ignoring me, giving me untrusting looks, and even running to my husband if I said his name. This was heartbreaking to me since I have put so much time into just being with him (and he is a complete mama's boy). He is a certified therapy dog, agility dog, and obedience dog, so he and I have had plenty of training together over the years. My husband loves the fact that Halo now sleeps on his side of the bed, greets him more so than he does me when we get home, and would rather "work" (agility/therapy work) with him than with me. I'm pretty sure Halo thinks I stink and have turned into an alien -- but I am getting used to it and it is nice to see husband getting some attention.

(We did have a good agility run last month though! Pic attached. I didn't realize my boobs had gotten so big until I saw this picture.)
  • My moms dog definitely knows! Look how sweet she is!
