Magnesium and fetal movement

I have been taking powdered magnesium on and off at night for all the health benefits that it provides. Including better sleep, help with heart burn, help with constipation ect. ect. But I have grown ever so slightly concerned when I started to notice that the day after I take the magnesium there is a significant drop in fetal movement. Normally he's moving around like crazy and is very active but if I took the magnesium the night before he will go almost the whole day with hardly a kick. And my assumption is that since the magnesium helps me to fall asleep and relax me that it's doing the same to him. I don't even take the full dose that's recommended. I was just curious if anyone else noticed the same thing. (P.S. This is something I will bring up with my midwife at my next appt.)

Re: Magnesium and fetal movement

  • I asked my Dr about taking magnesium at my last appointment because it helps with muscle twitches (I get them in my face..so annoying). He said it was a huge benefit not only for that but for bringing blood pressure down, and for calming the uterus. I doubt this is why you notice less movement...perhaps just being paranoid? I know anytime I take Tylenol I feel guilty so I'm there with ya, but magnesium should be fine :)

  • I don't know much about this, but when we treat moms with magnesium for high blood pressure, it causes grogginess.  Maybe it's causing the same in your baby- if it helps you sleep, it may help the baby, too?

I took magnesium with my first and am again with this pregnancy and baby girl is quite active. Could just be a coincidence. If you're worried maybe talk to your doctor.

  • I definitely think it relaxes the baby too especially if that's what it does to u bc whatever u put in ur body the baby gets it too so it makes sense I don't think you're being paranoid I would just try to cut back on some of the dose again
  • I've actually been taking it for the past couple of nights for constipation and it's been of great help. My naturopath dr told me at the beginning of my pregnancy that up to 400 mg/day was fine. My midwife supports it as well. I have not noticed any decrease in baby's movement, but this baby overall has been super active. I think you should call your dr/midwife for your peace of mind.
Just wondering, what kind do you take? I take Natural Calm.
Also, to make my baby move I drink ice cold water and lay on my left side, as per my dr as well. It always works for me, in case you wanna try that.
