Re: Question About work from home

  • Hi, can you explain what you mean? I have a full-time job and will be coming back at 100% but working from home one day per week - but do you mean that you are looking for a new job that can be done from home?

  • Yes a full time work from home job. My job now is temporary once baby is born they are not willing to hold my position for me which sucks
  • Ugh I'm sorry to hear that! I hope others have some ideas for you!

I'm sure jobs like this exist, but from what I understand they generally do not bring in a lot of income and you have to put in crazy hours to earn anything really substantial. There are definitely options though, you just need to do research. One option that would actually be fairly lucrative would be if you offered an in-home daycare type of thing for 1-2 kids - charge like $50-$100/day/kid and you could bring in $1000/week! But you'd need to read up on your state's laws concerning those, and you'd also need to be very clear with parents about what services you offer, what happens if your kids get sick, etc... from what I've heard, moms who offer this can be taken advantage of by other parents very easily. You also need to know what you can and cannot be held liable for. I thought about doing this myself, but I don't think that my current home is very conducive to me starting something like this.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • Some types of skillsets lend themselves nicely to remote or part-time work as well - bookkeeping or IT work example - not sure how feasible learning new skills might be, but it's a thought!

If jobs like this existed I think more people would be doing them.  Those who work from home generally have an established job before baby that is willing to accommodate them.  Even if you could find a job where you could work FT from home you would still need childcare, there is just no way you can give a baby all it needs while also meeting the demands of 40(+) hours a week.

I was a former Kindergarten teacher, since DD was born 4 1/2 years ago I started caring for another LO in our home FT.  It's enough to supplement DH's income, but certainly does not replace a second income.  Though when you factor in what we save in childcare and what I was making working at a Catholic school, we do come out ahead.  Perhaps doing home-daycare if you enjoy children?
  • The ones that occur to me are:

    1. Sales--if you have a large network of friends and acquaintances you could sell to, you could sell something like Scentsy, Pampered Chef or Mary Kay. I have never done this myself and I don't imagine it would bring in too much money, especially at first. Beware of scams when looking into sales from home jobs.

    2. Translation - if you speak two or more languages, you can look into sites online where you can register and take on translation projects others are willing to pay you for. Sometimes it costs something to register for the site.

If you have any other creative type talents like writing fan fiction or programming apps, you might be able to sell your stuff online.

Sites like eLance and Odesk let you bid on a variety of freelance jobs but it can take some time to get started and build the reputation needed to get regular work.

  • Maybe try googling for companies that have a tendency to lean toward virtual roles.  My employer seems to be going more and more towards virtual roles so save on real estate (there have been virtual roles for several years).  Some companies are big on this and others are not.  And of course really depends on the type of role you're looking for.  Some just wouldn't make sense to be allowed to work from home.

I also agree with PP that even with a work from home (virtual) role, child care is still needed (not sure though if trying for a work from home position was a way to avoid finding/paying for child care).
  • You may want to ask friends/family in your area if they know of anything. In my area we have several companies like 1-800 Contacts and Jet blue that offer work from home jobs. But I know for some of these jobs they require you to work at the actual site and be in good standing before they transfer you to be at home.
  • Ditto to PP about using the skills, background, and network you already have and looking into flexible positions, freelance work, tutoring in that subject, etc. I am able to load a fair amount of my work hours into evenings/nap time, but I had already been in my job for 4 years when we had kids.
