Pittsburgh Babies

babies with flat head

My daughter is 6 months old. She has torticollis on the left side of her neck and we have been going to physical therapy for 2 months now. Well now her left side of her head is fine but her right side is flat and now doctors want us to get her a helmet. It doesnt look as flat as it did before we started therapy. Her head actually looks a lot better now that we have been going to therapy. I do try to not let her lay on her flat side. I need opinions on the helmet because im so upset that she will have to get this.

  • If you trust her doctors, I'd follow their advice.   If you want a second opinion, ask your PT worker for the name of other doctors they work with that they like.   Good luck.

  • I would talk to your PT about this. Are you doing both early intervention and outpatient therapy? I saw a study last year that concluded that helmets do not help with plagiocephaly as much as previously though, and that intensive PT can help just as much and is more affordable! Of course it is ultimately your decision, but I would definitely explore other therapy routes and talk to your child's therapist. Maybe even a second opinion from a doctor. I'm a pediatric OT and have definitely seen PT work wonders for some of my kiddos!
