Nausea Meds

Has anyone (this pregnancy or past) begun taking prescription meds for morning sickness during the second trimester? What were you prescribed and will/did you take it for the rest of your pregnancy? My sickness has gotten so much worse the past few weeks (14w3d currently) and I am continuing to lose weight, so I am going to talk to the doctor at my appt. Wednesday. I just feel weird because I imagine most people only take them for a bit in their first trimester. I KNOW I need to eat (more than the bread I can keep down some days!) to nourish this baby, but I hate the idea of taking the meds. Thanks in advance for your input and experience!

I was on Diclegis for a bit and it helped but I was still feeling sick at night. Doc gave me 4mg of Zofran and it takes the edge off, but I'm still feeling bad at night so I'm gong to see if they can give me a higher dose. I'm 15w4d.

  • I take half a Unisom at night, which works, and that is the main ingredient in Diclegis so I am hoping that one works out. Are both meds daily, or as needed? Any side effects? Thank you!!!

The Diclegis was 3x daily and the Zofran is 3-4. The Diclegis tells you to start with one dose a day and then increase as needed. I know some people are taking the Zofran as needed but that hasn't worked for me.

I was against taking something too but at this stage ... We just can physically it mentally handle it anymore. I asked my dr for Meds last week and he said no believe it or not. I'm 15 weeks and he thinks it's gonna stop this week (ha wishful thinking) and to wait one more week. I started at 119, was down to 112, back up to like 116 so still down but starting to gain a lil. I have found the only thing that that takes the edge off is something plain, small but rich every 1.5 - 2 hours. Usually s bagel or some bread product for breakfast, then like 5 granola bars or cliff bars high in protein before I even get Hungry throughout the day, the. I attempt to eat a larger meal for dinner which I usually eat 3 bites of. Good luck
  • I took diclegis three times a day until last week, and an extra B complex daily. My ob will not prescribe zofran, and I wouldn't take it. Before you consider it you should know that the FDA recomends against its use. It is known to cause birth defects. I'm not telling you what to do, or trying to bash anyone for taking it. Just please do the reading and make a choice that you can live with for you and your baby.

I was prescribed them for my first pregnancy but i would vomit the pills back up so they never had a chance to work. I was hospitalized several times for dehydration.
  • @ltormey Thank you for the heads up! They offered meds four weeks ago and I declined, but it is good to know they might say no. Especially since I am pretty sure I will cry hahaha. My issue the past few weeks is I cannot get a system going that works. All of my old tricks are out the window, and I'll eat plain carbs (heaven forbid I put protein or a vegetable near my mouth) every two hours and it'll work for two days, then the next day I will eat the SAME things and keep nothing down for the entire day. The psychological impact is as concerning as the physical! Thank you for the heads up.

@LaurenBee24 Thank you for the info. I have done some research and kind of came to the same conclusion, but still am interested in the experiences of those who have taken it. The info out there seems very mixed. I am leaning towards specifically asking for Diclegis anyway since I've been doing the Unisom at night (I literally look forward to the thirty mintue mark after I pop it!), just hoping it makes me a little less sleepy so I can take it during the day.

I take phenegan supository form 25mg twice a day. I took it all throughout my last 2 pregnancies. I thought i would not need it with this one after getting to 14 weeks so i stopped taking but my ms came back with a vengeance. So that's what's keeping me out of the ER for dehydration
  • The dicelgis made me very sleepy. I had to nap at about 2pm every day. However, after throwing up about 40 times in one day I had no choice. Make sure you are looking at 2014 or newer studies on zofran... New evidence about risks to baby and mom have only recently come to light. My doctor said it had only been months since she got the directive from the fda recommending it not be prescribed. A large study was also published in 2013 that talks about the issues with the earlier studies. Fetal risks are lower in the 2nd trimester, but the potentialy deadly and harmful risks to the fetus associated with cardiac arrhythmia and some other risks do not diminish beyond 10 weeks.
  • I was on a prescription (can't remember the name off the top of my head) for nausea/vomiting with my son. I was sick pretty much the entire pregnancy, so this helped a lot. I started it in 2nd trip when the sickness didn't stop and I couldn't function as a teacher because I was constantly running to the bathroom.
My son is perfectly fine. Weigh the pros and cons and do what you have to do.
  • Oh, my insurance didn't cover the dicelgis, and it's just over $500 a month at the max dose. I found it to be worth every penny.
  • @mommamikos I am also a teacher! I have been on vacation this week and am terrified to go back tomorrow for that reason. I just started having to leave the classroom to get sick the week before vacation and I don't even know what to expect. This week has been bad and that is with all of the extra sleep, I can't imagine tomorrow with my 4:30 alarm. Breath mints are on the grocery list I'll send my husband out with later. I don't love idea of meds, but also cannot picture living like this at work for another seven weeks. Thank you for sharing, having someone else have the same professional concerns I do makes me feel better!
  • I've been taking zofran 4mg as needed since the beginning. Much less often now.
  • I took Zofran three times a day with my first pregnancy from 5 weeks until the day I delivered. She is healthy. This time around it is better, but still taking a 1/2 unison and b6 at night and one zofran late afternoon. You do what you need to do to keep nutrients in your body and help your baby grow. Every doctor has varying opinions, as do all moms-to-be, so do what you and your doctor feel best

  • I am on diglecis. Have been since week 12. Most of the time I only needed the night time dose of 2 pills. I would occasionally take another one or two thruout the day. I am almost 18 weeks and am starting to wean myself off of them because they do make me a little sleepy all day.

After being hospitalised yesterday due to dehydration as a result of vomiting, I'm now taking Unisom at night and Promethazine as needed during the day. Am 15+4 so definitely started after the first trimester. Honestly, I dont like the idea of taking meds whatsoever, BUT, me not getting anything, be it food or fluids, into my body is worse for baby than an FDA-cleared medicine is.. so I'll be taking them as needed.

  • I had a sit down with my OB and pharmacist and they both pulled out the Canadian maternity drug guide 2015 for me and the #1 drug of choice is Diclectin, then gravol, and then if those aren't working it is recommended to take Zofran along with it. I'm a nurse and have spoken to many doctors and surgeons on the surgical unit I work on and they have all said these medications are safe during pregnancy. The only reason I take them are because I've been throwing up consistently and it's been really interfering with work.
  • Diclegis is just the ingredient in Unisom sleep tabs plus vitamin B6, both of which you can easily get over the counter. Unisom sleep tabs are class B, so they are safe during pregnancy. New studies on Zofran show it is not safe after the first trimester. I wouldn't try any prescriptions unless Unisom tabs failed.
  • I did 3 diclegis a day from week 6 to 14... and they worked a little bit. The med allowed me to eat.. which at week 6 I stopped doing. But I was still throwing up ALL the time. At my 9 week apt. My doctor recommended zofran and I got the pills but when I got home I Google it to see if they were safe and saw way too many reasons not to take it. And so my husband threw the pills away right then. I read on a different pregnancy board this lady posted that she had taken zofran while pregnant and her baby was born with a bunch of heart defects. So I wouldn't recommend it. Also.. diclegis made me feel like a zombie for most of my day.
  • I took Diclegis -- two tablets at night. When my insurance wouldn't cover it after my samples ran out, my doctor told me to order a bottle of 25mg B6 and to buy 25mg tabs of Unisom Sleep Tabs and take one of each at night, when I normally took my Diclegis. It was a MIRACLE. I didn't have too bad of vomiting, but I had all day persistent nausea (including full green face--my coworkers were always worried).

My sister took Zofran, but I'm very hesitant about it. I've heard some not-so-good things about it, but be sure to talk to your doctor and they can help determine what's best for you.

I took Zofran once at 12 weeks for non-stop vomitting
  • I heard the Diclegis releases a little slower than the OTC Unisom, so while it makes you groggy it isn't as bad. Has anyone experienced this? Woke up today and threw up three times at home and then had to leave one class to do it while teaching. Soooo over this. Thanks for all the information and experiences!
  • I was prescribed Zofran, and took it for the first trimester as needed and have slowed down considerably now (16w6d). I asked my Dr for a refill though to keep on hand, just because we go on our boat fairly often and now it's beginning to be nice out (in Fl)! My doctor did say that with the nausea medicine, comes constipation. So be sure to drink LOTS of water, and keep up with fruits and veggies to try to counteract it, nothing is worse it seems! lol
  • I have had severe nausea and vomiting since 6 weeks, I'm 18 weeks now. I started with zofran, regallan, diclegis, unisom and b6, Phenergan and nothing worked at all for me. I was given a Zofran pump which helped for 3 weeks before I was back in the hospital. I now have a picc line in my arm and give myself 3 iv bags daily with 50mg of Phenergan mixed in. I have had a really rough pregnancy so far but I'm hopeful that things will get better. If you are trying to stay away from zofran, regallan is the best substitute in pill form. Hope you ladies feel better soon!! =)
  • I took unisom+ B6 at night and that helped (esp because it kept me asleep when I was puking at midnight) I would also take zofran if I couldn't function or had not eaten for awhile-my husband is a pharmacist and talked to my OB-it all comes down to considering risks-I was not eating/keeping food down, was dehydrated and that wasn't healthy. I also recommend sour candies and eating dry cereal right before bed and right when you wake up-before you get out of bed-that has been huge for me. Once I hit 14 weeks I would say I have one "bad" day every so often compared to everyday.
  • I take 4 mg Zofran at 4 pm and unisom/b6 combo around 8 pm. My vomiting was every evening before taking Zofran. Constipation has been bad! So now I take stool softeners and fiber.
