Contractions or what?

I know I am going to sound incredibly naive, but I've had this uncomfortable "tightness" off and on for the last several weeks that has literally taken my breath away. It's happening more and more as I get closer to my due date. Seems like it's happening hourly today... Now here's how I know I sound like an idiot, this is my third child. My first was an induction and I can tell you if I ever had Braxton Hicks, I never felt them. I couldn't even feel the contractions on pitocin though it's not to say I didn't try. My second came with a case of preeclampsia, so he was taken 3 weeks early, but I had some lower back pains two weeks prior to his birth. With this third my doctors went ahead and scheduled me for a third c-section (and I'm getting ready my tubes tied) this Monday. My doctor has not once checked me to see if I've even dialated because I've had no pain. Is this normal? Will I make it to Monday?

Re: Contractions or what?

  • The rule is if you have contractions lasting one minute long, every 5 minutes, for at least one hour...call your doc to check if youre dialated. Generally speaking though, you will know if its the real deal! Good luck!

  • The above rule doesn't usually apply to second and 3rd time mamas. I get that tightening all the time and it has gotten worse as the day gets closer. I would wait for some other signs or a little more intensity and closer contractions. How many weeks are you?

I am a FTM and I have been feeling the tightness foe over a month now. It hurt one time but most of the time it's just tight. It is doing something because during my last check I was 2cm dilated.
  • Sounds like Braxton hicks.
They are warm up contractions, but not typically "productive".
They can be triggered by dehydration, full bladder, lots of activity...
(I get breathless from them sometimes, too.)
  • Those sound just like Braxton Hicks to me.

Thanks all! :) these moments of breathlessness are nearly over. Going in tomorrow for the schedule c-section. Can't wait to meet my Little Miss. Also can't wait to get my tubes tied. Three kids is enough for this Momma. Though my grandmother says I need two more.
