Ok mama's i want opinions.....

So i live in Michigan and its been warm the last few days. Well I went to do my grocery shopping the other day and as i was leaving there was a car parked by the store and out of habit i looked in the windows checking for small children and animals as the windows were up and it was warm enough that it could get hot in the car (i just looked not like face up against the glass or anything) At that moment my heart dropped and i almost busted the window out. In the back seat a little boy no way he could have been more than 2 at the very most was strapped in his carseat sleeping and all alone. I had no phone and no paper to write down the license plate number. I hollered for the employee walking towards the door and as i told them the issue and was getting ready to say they needed to call the police the father was walking out. He goes "thats my car and he is fine" so i flipped i said "no its not fine! you can't leave a child in the car for any reason! its illegal and he could be hurt!"  he just looked at me and said it was fine then said see here is my wife. they had a huge cart full of stuff and their other child was with them. i flipped out they kept saying it was fine and it didnt matter they did it all the time i lost it and told them they were worthless parents and one day it could kill him and if it did they will wish they had listened to me. they left before i could write anything down or get the police out there. I just want to know if i did anything wrong and what other mothers would have done?

That is not fine, at all!! So many children die every year because of careless parents like these, it makes me sick. There was a story on the news recently about a cop taking the baby out and putting the mother in the car so she could feel for herself how not ok it is. Really liked that story, best way to get the point across is to it to them. (obviously the cop was keeping an eye on her and let her out when he saw she was really uncomfortable, all safe.)

I dont know what i wouldve done in this country. Back home its legal to break a window to get either a child or pet out of the ssituation, but i believe that's not the case here.. I might just forget about where i am, get worked up and break a window anyway honestly, i dont really think when i get upset :p

  • Wow I would have cried ! I could never leave my child in the car !! I would worry too much, not only about the heat and weather ... But what if he chokes on something or gets out of the car by himself .. Or someone steals him ... That seems like it would cause a child emotional distress :/ ! I can't even imagine !! It's crazy how people think they can leave children and animals in vehicles :/ !!
  • First, YOU did nothing wrong. I'm not sure I'd call the police, but I'd certainly want to alert a store employee so they could page the parents . . . In some states, it's illegal to leave your kid for even a short amount of time (like a quick run into 7-11 where you could possibly even still see the car), but no matter where you live, it's not safe to leave a child in the car when it's warm out, especially for a full shopping trip. I hope these people realize that before it's too late.

My son tends to fall asleep in the car, so I either go shopping without him or wake him up to go into the store. It gives me anxiety to leave him in the car long enough to drop off a Red Box movie or to run inside the house for a minute. Once, I accidentally locked the keys in the car while in the parking lot of my apartment, and my son was in there for maybe 20 minutes while I waited on AAA. I can't imagine leaving him while I browsed in Target.

So as I said, I think you did the right thing.

Wow! How can you deliberately leave your kid in the car?! And then argue that they are fine? I don't get that logic at all. I think you did the right thing and I'd do the same if I ever saw a kid in a car alone. It's not something anyone should gamble. If there was the mom and dad, why couldn't one stay in the car with the kid? Or how about come shopping another day of you can't go in alone? Seeish. Stupid, stuipd decision and you are right-- sadly it's a matter of WHEN they are going to regret not listening to you, not if.
  • Wow if the little boy was sleeping and they didn't want to wake him one of the parents should have stayed in the car with him while the other shopped. Crazy. I probably wouldnt have called them worthless parents in front of their kids, but you were upset and they ARE wrong. That is not ok at all.
  • Leaving a 2 year old vs a 12 year old is a big difference! I think people who freak over older kids are obnoxious and to into people's business but leaving a sleeping toddler in a car is not ok!!! And absolutely no excuse ever. Especially since one of the parents could have done the shopping perfectly fine while the other waited with the child. They cannot open doors if they over heat. They can't even unbuckle themselves from their seat. It is horrible.
  • I called the cops on people for that before. A guy from my office in Atlanta was charged for murder because his son died in the car in the parking lot. I'm sure yall saw it on the news. I don't even leave my dog in the car...no way in hell I'm leaving my child.
  • I would have the called the cops. It's never under no circumstances ok to leave your child in a car.

Two of my fiends and I were almost abducted when we were 14 because we were in an unlocked car without an adult. Two guys got in and luckily we had the wits (and ability) to get out. They caught the guys and they did jail time but to this day I won't sit in an unlocked car... and I sure as hell wouldn't leave a child in one either no matter what their age.
  • Those parents should have been arrested! There are so many what ifs in a situation like that and it just hurts my heart. You never under any circumstance leave a child in the car alone! That poor baby!
  • In my state it's illegal to leave kids or animals in the car. My sister in law actually did end up calling the police to ask what to do. They thanked her for calling and sent someone over to let the child out and talk to the parents. Of course the mom wasn't happy but it's the right thing to do.
