Question for BTDT moms about registry

This may sound like a dumb question, but I am so lost when it comes to bottles and pacifiers. Is one brand really better than another, or is it more of a baby preference thing? Does it not matter at all? Is there something I should know about one kind or another?

I am planning on registering for feeding supplies and pacis. Since I have to pick something to put on the registry, I want to make the "right" choice. Is there even such a thing?

Re: Question for BTDT moms about registry

  • I was always told it depends on baby. I would recommend putting a few different ones on the registry then seeing what baby likes once he/she is here.

We were lucky with dd she took the first kind we tried (playtex ventiaire or something like that I believe) but I've heard of many stories where baby refuses one kind (or several).

Register for a few different kinds. DS hated glass bottles, but would take plastic. You can always buy more of the bottle your baby prefers.

Same with pacis. If your baby actually takes to one, you might need to try a few.

I also registered for swaddling blankets, books, etc.

  • As PPs mentioned, register for a couple/several different bottles (Tommee Tippee, Dr. Brown's, and Philips Avent if I were to recommend a top 3). I wouldn't go too overboard because you will be returning the ones that aren't the #1 for your LO. DD did Tommee Tippee with expressed breast milk when I went back to work or if DH and I went out to dinner. I read a lot about nipple confusion and we didn't have a single issue with that one. It can be different with each baby! I've heard great things about Dr. Brown's for digestive/gas issues. When I looked at TT, I figured it seemed like the most natural-looking nipple choice.

I wouldn't register for pacifiers. DD wouldn't take them, so you might not use any at all. If you do, the hospital gives you one, and you could buy a set to try it out after LO is born.

As for feeding supplies, I think the suggestion I'd make for a registry would be pumping and storage items if you plan to breast feed. I had the Medela Pump in Style and registered for the stuff that didn't come with the insurance package. For instance, storage bags, an extra set of tubes, travel bag (if you want), etc. I might also suggest registering for a simple hand pump so you have that option.

My friend recommended registering for a set of long spoons, snack catchers, and a small set of sippy cups for the next level. I loved having several of those items so we could just grab them when we were ready to start solids. Good luck!

  • Exactly what PP said. Register for a couple different ones and only open one and see how the baby likes it. If not, move on to the next. My daughter did great with the avent natural bottles and nipples. They worked great for us and did not have too many pieces to clean after each bottle, like the dr. Brown ones.

With pacifiers, my daughter loves the one from the hospital, avent rubbery ones. We bout a few wubbanubs, the paci with the animals attached. They were adorable and we never lost them.

  • I agree with all of the above.  I got some bottle samples from the doctor's office, and registered for a few from Tommy Tippee and Dr. Brown's, but in the end we just used the ones that came with my Medela pumping supplies because DS did not care at all.

If you are planning on pumping and storing, I would suggest registering for some breastmilk storage suppies.  I liked to store bags of 2.5-4 oz. increments in the freezer, and I found the medela bags worked great.  I also got the medela bottle tops that had changable clicking tops depending on the day of the week the milk was pumped.  I found those essential for keeping track of using milk in the right order!
(google 'Medela Breastmilk Storage Solution' if interested!).

  • I know this is probably old school and I'm probably showing my age, but I have used the playtex nurser bottles. I like that I don't have to sterilize the bottle every time because they come with the liners. We also travel a lot so I don't have to bring a bunch of bottles that are bulky and take up a bunch of room. Just need a couple bottles and several nipples. The liners are compact and can be put into a storage bag for traveling.

    @LiveNLove44's recs are spot on!

We used Dr. Brown's and no paci because my daughter didn't take to them.

  • I personally think Lansinoh breast pads are the best and Lasinoh storage bags are the best bang for the buck. The Medela storage bags are really expensive. If you plan on pumping a lot it isn't the best value. Also when I was ready to start giving my daughter a bottle I bought one style, one bottle at a time. They are expensive! Breastflow ended up being the ones she preferred. They have a two part nipple but was less tiny parts to clean the Dr Browns. I didn't register for bottles because I was breastfeeding. I bought them later when nursing was well established. I didn't want to have bottles or formula in the house because it could be way too easy to give up at 2 am. Just my preference...
  • You guys are the best! Thank you for the Recs. I guess we'll register for a few different kinds and see what he/she likes and then exchange if we need to. I didn't even think about extra pump supplies outside storage baggies or anything for starting solids.

Thank you soooo much!! It's so nice having a team of experts on here!

Also, I highly recommend the Medela steam sterilizer bags. They are awesome and don't take up any space. You can use them for bottle parts, pump parts, pacis, toys, whatever!

  • I also registered for a box of diapers in each size and older baby feeding supplies and toys. It is easy to get Mstuck with newborn on the brain but they grow amazingly fast!
