Placenta pills

What are your thoughts on taking placenta pills? I've been thinking about it and it's something I'm interested in. How do you ladies feel about it? And if you've taken them, what was your experience like?

Re: Placenta pills

  • Yeah I've been thinking about having my placenta encapsulated too. Sounds like a good idea to help with recovery post birth. Also meant to help with depression.

  • I'm also looking into this. My midwife said my birthing center allows you to take your plencenta if you'd like to. I've spoken with a few women who have said they loved it. Just make sure if you get it done they don't add anything to the pills such as herbs, etc. You don't know what you could be allergic to.
  • I have friends who had bad PPD with their first and then encapsulated their placenta and didn't get it the second time. There's no knowing if it really helped. But the people I know who have taken theirs say they just felt better after.
It's something I have seriously considered but I'm not sure if I will do it.
Our hospital used to make women go through a lot to take theirs home but now it's much easier.
  • I will definitely have my placenta encapsulated. Even though I'm vegan, it doesn't even bother me one bit. To each their own!

Why would anyone want to eat their own placenta?! That's just gross! My mom wants me to get my placenta so she can grow a fruit tree!! I don't know about all that!! :-?

I don't know what the studies say on it actually being beneficial, but something about the whole concept makes me kind of green around the gills. Dehydrated placenta, yum. By yum I mean bleh. Good on the women that get it done and stomach it though.

I haven't suffered from ppd thank goodness. If it helps those that do placebo effect or not. I am all for them doing it. That being said it's not for me. It's just gross to me. I have seen my placenta and it's not some thing I want to ingest pill or not.

I did mine my last pregnancy. It was spendy and a year later I still haven't taken them all because I forgot about them. I might start taking them again though :). I hear they can help with menapose to. You can freeze them. I didn't notice any difference by taking them.
  • Do you guys know who to contact on where to find someone who will do it ?

Search locally. Most doulas and birth centers will know someone.
  • Definitely not for me. :-&

But more power to you! I plan on doing pilates and eating healthy to help ward off PPD.

  • There are absolutely no studies that have shown this helps with anything. There are lots of websites that claim benefit but there is no medical evidence. In addition it's incredibly expensive and it's not regulated at all. You have absolutely no way of knowing that it's your placenta you are taking.
  • Oh, and animals don't eat their placentas for health benefits, they eat them because the smell attracts predators.
  • There is no scientific evidence to support any claims that consuming your placenta does anything positive for your body. A lot of people claim it "helps" with various things like PPD and whatnot but... there's no evidence that it's more than a placebo.
  • I've also heard claims that it helps with breast milk supply. I got my last placenta encapsulated and it's worth a shot.

Also most vitamins and supplements are NOT regulated. Really anyone can make a supplement and sell it.

I could never cook up or drink the tea of my placenta like some do, but I have no issues with the pills.
  • We considered doing it. We live in an area where it is fairly common and I have friends that have done it.
After speaking with our doula and midwife, we found that the lack of scientific evidence was what sealed our decision not to do it with our son. We won't be doing it this time either.
But, hey, if you think it helps then by all means do it.

Talk about growing the fruit of your loins. *budum tiss*
Hahahaha!!!! This! I laughed so hard!!! Thank you!
  • I think vitamins not being regulated is different than someone processing your placenta not being regulated. There is no standard for cleaning equipment or ensuring that what you get is your placenta.

Hahahhaa...I just peed myself a little.

As for the OP's question- there is no scientific proof at all that placenta ingestion is beneficial. In fact, there are many studies which show that it has no effect whatsoever. So, no, I won't be spending the effort and money to do something that is (1) gross and (2) ineffective. I do, however, believe in the placebo effect, and am happy to hear it helps some people. My plan is to eat healthy (sticking with fruits, veggies, and body parts of other animals that don't include myself) and remain as active as possible post-delivery.

  • I had friends who did it and thought it helped but talking to the doula I want to use she told me to really research and after researching a bit I will not be doing it.
  • Oh, I'm glad people like my terrible pun from two months ago!

Also from time to time animals eat their young so.... An animal doing something isn't necessarily a good indicator that we should do it.

  • I haven't seen a lot of studies either, just word of mouth from other moms. My sister is a doula and also offers this service so I will take advantage of it. It makes sense to get a dose of the hormones you have lost back.. Friends have said it helped with milk supply, headaches and ppd.. You could always do it and not take them if you change your mind.
  • Meh, no thanks. Couldn't find the concrete evidence to support the benefits so I think it's just another silly crunchy thing. You do you, though.
