Reflux- I'm losing my mind

alright moms I would appreciate any and all feedback regarding infant reflux. My little guy has always spit up a lot but over the past few days things have escalated to the point where he is screaming a lot and will only sleep on his tummy on my chest. He also has always loved breastfeeding and will do it even just to soothe himself but now he screams during feeds. I think he slept maybe 3 hrs total last night and I'm an emotional FTM feeling helpless.

  • Does sleeping on an incline help? Like a Rock 'n' Play???
  • @Bigboobsmcgee ped prescribed Zantac (I think that's what it's called) and yes he usually sleeps in his rock n play

My son is 6weeks tomorrow and is suffering the exact same symptoms ( silent reflux). Up until yesterday his spit ups have been mild but now its like a mini volcano. He also kicks his legs a lot and grunts and groans in pain and his tummy is constantly gurgling. I have been sleeping with him on my chest too as this is the only position he will sleep for more than 30min. He is on Losec 5mg twice a day but i am going to increase to three doses as he is just so unsettled. Can anyone help. I have been told breastfeeding doesnt agrivate the reflux but then others say formula with a thickening agent is the only way to get it under control. Im just so heartbroken to stop breastfeeding as i know it is the best thing for him. Am i being selfish? Also why will he sleep in my arms craddled but as soon as i put him down in his bassinet on his back he wakes up choking and crying from reflux.
  • @tiana56 I read (I think it's reflux.org) that BFing is still the best possible even for reflux. I would suggest getting a rock n play or elevating one end of the crib mattress. The past few nights I've been able to get my little guy asleep then put him in his rock n play since its on an incline. Good luck to you mamma! I'm calling a GI specialist tomorrow because my little one is one Zantac and maalox until the Zantac kicks in. The maalox is definitely working but it's not good for them to be on for more than a few days so I don't know what to do!
  • At 3 weeks my son was diagnosed with Pierre Robin Syndrome. Most babies with this have severe reflux, to the point they may stop eating bc of the pain. He will be 7 weeks on Thursday and has been on domperadone and omeprazole for 10 days. His Drs at Sick Kids say they see much higher success rates with these over the liquid Zantac. Our son is no longer projectile vomiting. He still gets a bit of reflux but I don't think it's hurting him as much. Our sons OT has also recommended smaller, more frequent feeds, feed him sitting up on my lap and to keep him upright for 20 min after. It's a lot of work since I also pump but I think it's helping!! Hope my experience helps!
  • We had the same situation! Our doctor prescribed zantac. 1.5mil 2 times a day. My son was also put on Alimentum formula and we were told to put a table spoon on rice cereal in his bottles.  We haven't had a problem since. Our little boy is now happy and we actually get to enjoy him and some much needed rest :) Good luck!
