Backhanded complements

Curious if anyone else has gotten this as well. For my job I see a lot of people periodically throughout the year that I haven't seen in awhile and when they find out I'm pregnant they say how they could tell I gained weight or that they noticed my hips got big so that explains it! Then they proceed to tell me how happy they are for me lol. Was in nail salon and girl asked if I was pregnant and when I said yes they then said how they were talking about me last time how I gained weight but they weren't sure if I was pregnant or just got fat! Guess we just have to embrace these comments as well!

Re: Backhanded complements

  • People can be oblivious... And rude. My Aunt told me she knew I was pregnant because my face looked fat.... I was just like "....... Uhhhhmmmm thanks? -_-" I mean, really, does that make people feel better about themselves by saying you look fat?

I don't understand where the idea that saying things like this are ok because you're saying it to a pregnant woman?

  • This happened to me as well, my aunt made a comment about a photo of me posted on facebook, she said she thought i looked a heavier, at the point the photo was taken I was only a few weeks pregnant and had actually lost a few pounds because of sickness.  So yea, not sure why people feel like it is somehow acceptable to tell you looked like have gained weight and for it to be okay since you are pregnant . . ,
  • My mom said I knew you were pregnant because you ate a lot Christmas ! I was like three weeks then I didn't even know I was pregnant til February uhhhh! Mom why ya gotta be so rude lol
  • MIL told me my twins must be healthy because I was bigger than she was when she delivered her twins full term. I was 16 weeks at the time. I think she meant well but it still hurt.

A shopping trip last week at 18 weeks was rather short lived when a man asked me when they were going to induce me because "you must be ready to pop!" I stormed out furious because I felt so big that day.

At 19 weeks I measure the same I did with DS at 33 weeks. Twins sure do make a difference! But people have no filter and that can surely hurt especially when they make size comments.
