I don't know if my allergies are really bad or if I'm getting a cold but I woke up today so conjested I haven't breathed all day. Is it OK to mix allergy and cold mess all 5 weeks preggers?
Before I found out I was of...I was soooo sick. Literally about a week after I ovulated I got a stuffy nose...chest cold followed then constant puking. I thought I was dying and found out I was pg lol but the stuffiness hasn't gone away. The Dr says everything swells up...mucus membranes like the vagina and nose swell and we leak from one end and get stuffy on the other lol
Lol mine has just been suuuuuper dry, like I need to get some moisture in there! But I was really sick for about a month before I found out I was pregnant and I've never had a stuffy nose like that before, I actually considered going to the hospital because I couldn't breath and I had a really bad sore throat at the time as well. It was miserable
I was super congested between 4-6 weeks, but it's gotten better. I remember the third trimester being miserable; it wasn't congestion then, just swollen nasal passages.
My OB explained that pregnancy can exacerbate seasonal allergies. Mine are on overdrive. No cold meds. But otc allergy meds are ok, cough drops are also fine.
I'm in the same boat. Instead of meds, I use steemy hot shower, u can just turn it on if u have already showered. Or a pot of boil water place towel over head and breath in the steam.
So congested but I have bad allergies to begin with. I take benadryl about every other night. Which is a lot less than I used to take allergy meds, but I hate to overdo it. I take it when I'm coughing and sneezing so bad I can't sleep.
I've had a cold and been v congested since before I found out I was pregnant! I never get colds and it was one of the reasons I suspected pregnancy! Unfortunately it's still hanging around!
Mine have been acting up as well, and I'm not allowed to take my normal prescription. I know along with Benadryl, Claritin, and Zyrtec are considered safe to take. It just depends on you, for me Zyrtec works better than the other too.
I have the worst cough ever. It went from being a a starchy throat sinus thing to this nonstop deep chest cough. I don't know what to do! I found some things that work temporarily but it's been a week and it's not getting better actually think it's getting worse. I am afraid to take any meds at 5weeks. And besides the cough I feel totally fine
Trying to figure out where my seasonal allergies went... I had the WORST allergies, maybe it's the move but I moved to Georgia were pollen counts are amazingly high, LO must be my natural antihistamine... Regular Claritin OK, Benadryl OK. For Claritin if your not a taker normally, most dollar stores sell 5 pills for a dollar, and that usually my suggestion to TRY before u buy a big script. I worked for a OTC pharmaceutical company before moving to Georgia, my coworkers all asking what's on my approved list to send along with the baby gifts so I don't have to go out and buy a bunch
Yes! About two days after my positive pregnancy test I immediately came down with a cold! I've been so congested for two weeks now! I've had luck with steamy showers and a Neti-pot. Just letting it run its course and accepting that this is all part of it!
It's been a while since I've seen any updates on this thread. How are you ladies handling your rhinitis, allergies, or colds that have caused nasty congestion? Has it mostly cleared up or are you still struggling?
I ask because I got a nasty cold from my husband over the weekend. I had body aches, chills/fever, and a nasty head cold. Most of that has passed, but my nose is constantly running, the pressure in my head from congestion is ridiculously painful, and I sneeze every 5 minutes or so. It's hard to even carry on a conversation. My doctor isn't sure if I've got a sinus infection or severe pregnancy rhinitis. We're waiting on tests results to rule out the infection, but she's inclined to think it's rhinitis.
Anyway, to the ladies who posted here before, and to any who had rhinitis with their previous pregnancies: If this nastiness does turn out to be my constant companion for the next 6 months, do you have any advice? Any natural remedies you'd suggest to make it easier to cope? (I'm already doing saline rinses and using a humidifier at night for my existing allergies)
Yes! Mine have horrible the last week or so. I'm trying to avoid taking anything even though I know some medicines are okay. If it gets unbearable I will have to take something. I have been using a Netipot and that really helps. I live in Nashville and it's pretty bad this time of year for seasonal allergies.
I'm congested too and very dry....used to have a problem with nose bleeds as a child but has since subsided as an adult. Pregnancy seems to have brought it back and everything coming out of my nose is bloody! Anyone else having this issue along with the congestion and dryness?
Yes, totally congested! Especially when laying down. I hear it's actually a symptom. Something about the surplus of blood causing tissue to swell. I'm sure spring allergies doesn't help though.
@BrOwNh2211 yikes! Thankfully I've only had a little bit of pink occasionally with this 'cold'. Ugh, I don't think I could take nosebleeds on top of everything else. I think you should probably let your doctor know about the bleeding. My brother used to get really really bad nose bleeds when he was little (think slasher movie, blood on every surface). What we ended up doing for him was running a humidifier constantly, doing saline rinses 3-5 times a day, and using cotton swabs to smear the inside of his nose with a mixture of almond oil and aloe vera a couple times a day. I think coconut oil works the same way. I know that's all stuff you've probably been told, but since it helped him, I figured I'd pass it along anyway.
I have been using a neti pot with the matching salt packet (using distilled water or boiled water, since tap water is not safe for neti rinse). I have pretty severe allergies and have continued my prescribed allergy medication, unfortunately I feel like my prescription is barely touching the sneezing and post nasal drip. I have headed off the congestion with a couple doses of plain mucinex early, the neti pot and humidifier with Vik's (I also sleep with my head elevated). I do plan on asking the OB if anything else can be done for my allergies because the sneezing and runny nose are ridiculous. But I am thrilled I have avoided a nasty sinus infection or bronchitis (I typically end up needing 2 rounds of treatment which usually includes antibiotics and steroids to kick either of those--and I rarely avoid them if I am exposed to a cold).
I actually only suffered from mere minutes at a time of nausea at a time and usually a deep breath, some water or ginger candy made it pass. I have thrown up twice (at bedtime both times) and I swear it was the post nasal drip. I have heard just being pregnant can cause a runny nose, joy!
Anyway, that is where my allergies are at and what I have used with some but not complete effectiveness.
My doctor told me last week that I can take Benedryl for stuffy nose and congestion. She also said some people use benedryl for morning sickness...never heard that before!
Thanks ladies! It's good to know I'm not the only one that's really congested. Since I'm already taking Claritin round the clock, Benadryl at bedtime, and rinsing with saline, I'll just have to put up with it for the long run. My doctor did say that as I get close to the end of the second trimester there are nasal sprays I can use. I'm just used to being on stronger allergy meds, so when I add a cold and pregnancy rhinitis to the mix, I'm a mess. Hang in there ladies! I've heard allergies can be easier to handle in the second and third trimesters.
My allergies have been awful last 2 days... Straight nasal burning/itching, I'll get clogged up (won't come out when I blow but it sure as heck will run) I know some allergy meds are safe but I don't like taking meds period... Pregnant or not I'm weird about stuff. I'm just suffering through it...
I know the feeling! It just runs and runs, dripping everywhere, but the moment I blow my nose, nothing will come out. Lol
It honestly feels like I'm not taking anything for my allergies, since the Claritin doesn't seem to do much. Unfortunately, as much as I'd prefer to not take any medicines while pregnant, if I go more than a week or so without any allergy medicine, I quickly develop bronchitis that often turns into pneumonia.
What's really helped me, since the allergy meds don't really treat congestion, is steam. I boil a pot of water and then lean over it with a towel over my head to trap the steam. It's a little gross, snot just pours out, but it feels glorious. I think you can add Vicks to the water too, it's just menthol, and my doc said it's totally okay.
