5 weeks 3 days U/S no heartbeat. Miscarriage?

I just came back from the doctors office, had a transvaginal ultrasound and could only see the empty sac, no heartbeat, no yolk sac, nothing. Doctor told me not to get my hopes up because I might end up miscariaging, has anyone else seen a baby at 5'3 weeks ?

  • I've never seen the baby that early. What did the sac measure? It should be around 10mm +/- 2mm by 5w3d. Nothing else may show up until 6w.

  • At 5 weeks and 6 days, I could only see the yolk sac.  According to the website I referenced most frequently (https://www.babymed.com/is-my-hcg-blood-level-normal), it looks like you could very easily not see a yolk sac if you ovulated even one day later than expected.  I know it's hard not to worry, but I'd wait until the next ultrasound to get too worried.  It sounds like you were bought in a bit early.

  • I was in the hospital for food poisoning (had it really bad) during my 5 week. They did an u/s just in case my pregnancy was affected, but there was nothing showing either. They did a blood test to make sure my hcg levels were rising as expected and they were. They said it was too early to detect anything in the u/s. Don't fret just yet.
  • The sac measured 12 mm, I should say I had brown spotting 2 days ago, very light and it lasted only a day and a half

  • At 5w5d all I saw was a yolk sac. A week later baby and HB
  • According to ultrasoundpaedia.com, 12mm is the threshold for when you should see a yolk sac. When I went in at 5w5d, I was only 11.5mm and the yolk sac was barely a shadow. 4 days later, I was 16mm and everything was there including the heartbeat. My doctor didn't even want to do the first u/s because she said it was too early to see anything and she didn't want to worry me. My suggestion is to have a follow up u/s after you hit 6w.

  • Usually at this point you should only see a sac (I was at doctor's yesterday at 5w3d, and it was the same, she didn't expect to see a HB). The previous time I had spotting all the time starting at 5 weeks and I eventually miscarried, but a mild spotting that stopped, or even continues but is not bright red could be ok. Don't panic, monitor the spotting and if it continues, go to the doctor.
Good luck! Sending you good vibes.
  • I went in when I thought I was 6w1d, but the ultrasound showed an empty sac measuring 5w0d. Went back five days later, and there was the baby, measuring 6w1d, with a beautiful heartbeat. 5w3d is suuuuuuper early, so I wouldn't worry just yet.

  • I went in thinking I was 5w3d. Turned out I was a week off. I was 4w3d with an empty sac. Ten days later I had a beautiful little heartbeat and a nice yolk sac. Maybe the dating is off or it could just be too early. I hope everything works out for you.

We said goodbye to our sweet Taylor Ashley on August 8, 2012.We lost baby Noelle on May 1, 2015

Mom to Cam and Al, now expecting baby number 3, August 2016. Praying for lots of sticky baby dust!
  • I had an us today, at 5w3d. We just saw a simple sac nothing else and the dr said I was right on track for where I am. I wouldn't sweat it yet.
  • I was in a similar position and am waiting for Friday's ultrasound like a kid waiting for Christmas morning!! I'll post an update then.
  • Please do post an update! I'll update everyone as well!

Yes definitely give yourself some time before you lose hope. And your dates may be a bit off , give it a week or 2 (I know it's hard)
  • Went in at 6w2d and only saw a sac.  4 days later a baby with heartbeat.  That is way early to see anything on ultrasound.  That is typically why doctors wait until 8 weeks when they can be sure to see everything.

    Don't worry, totally normal.

  • I just had my first u/s yesterday and even though LMP says I am 7 weeks 4 days, by my calculations I am 5 weeks 5 days (I have PCOS, which gives me long cycles). I only saw the sac on the u/s as well and the doctor told me that is completely normal if I am only 5 weeks. They did a blood draw to check my HCG and if it's high enough they will have me come back in a couple days for another u/s. If it isn't very high I will go back in a couple days for another blood draw so they can see if my HCG is going up or if it is dropping. Hang in there! It is totally normal!
  • Wait 7-14 days and 2 more ultrasounds in between. I had a similar scare. Even went to a high risk pregnancy doctor. Both my regular and high risk physician told me given what they see to remove the whole pregnancy all together. I spent that whole weekend depressed and not eating based off what doctor said. I asked if he could give it one more ultrasound before being so quick to write me off. Instead of being understanding and respecting what I ask. He replies by saying if j need to wait and prolong it all for my own emotional reason fine.
I just spent whole weekend finding a different doctor and I found one. First thing Monday morning I went and the new doctor respected how I felt and did an u/s and not only found a baby but a heart beat as well.
I withdrew myself from my old doctors office seeing as he not only was ready to write me off but he would have had me abort a pregnancy for his own convenience.
Please wait and give it 1-2 weeks and again 2 more u/s in between. Your baby plays peek-a-boo with u.
Good luck and I truly sympathize with any woman going through this. Just pray and give ur baby a chance by not breaking down and giving up but by following up with a 2nd opinion and more u/s.
    Prayers
  • I had an us at 5w3d too. Barely barely could see the yolk sac. And no heart beat. To early heart isn't even formed typically until 5w5d to 6s. I'd wait until your next us
  • I've been trying to rest as much as possible, just to be safe. Thank you all for the prayers. Will post update next week after next u/s

  • Do what you need to do to feel happy about the baby, but studies show that bed rest neither increases nor decreases the risk of miscarriage.  Or as my doctor said, "It doesn't matter if you're standing on your head or laying in bed."  If staying active will keep your mind off things, do it.

And good luck.  Fingers crossed for you.

  • I'm not exactly on bed rest just getting plenty of sleep and resting when I'm tired. Thanks for your thoughts @SilverRayn

  • I was told around 6 weeks there was no baby and no hb could be detected. However at 7w6d saw a perfectly healthy baby and hb of 158. I'm not quite in the clear yet. But baby is hanging on. Don't give up just yet. Big *hugs* it's amazing how such a tiny baby can cause us all such worry...most of us go through it. Being s mom is hard from the very start. But we can't give up. Keep us posted hun.
  • Your hcg levels are doing fine and you're SO early yet! My ob won't even see you until 8 weeks :) There's no way you should be worried until like 8-9 weeks! Our bodies are weird and occasionally it can actually longer than usual even to see anything. But you are way early to be worried yet...
  • I was supposed to be 6w 1d when they did my trans vag us and they couldn't even say for sure that I'm pregnant. Saw 2 small black spots but can't say for sure that it's even 1 baby. Did hcg testing and should have results back today
  • UPDATE: got an u/s yesterday and saw the tiny baby with her tiny heartbeat! So excited! I still have some brown spotting but everything seems to be ok!

  • Great news @fiorip!!!
  • Hcg testing went well but they won't do another ultrasound until May 14th which I think is stupid. Everything that I have read says that if there isn't a heartbeat or anything then they normally do a repeat ultrasound in a week or two
  • @domsmom52714 they usually schedule another U/S as you said for a week or two but maybe they just want to give you enough time to be absolutely certain. Always stay positive, I know it's hard but there's not much else you can do. It's a good sign hcg levels are as expected. When I had a miscarriage a few months back, hcg levels were dropping.
