i never had these with my 1st and really never in my life period, until recently. Im 27 wks and wake up in excruciating pain usually in my left calf. It brings me up out of bed ready to cry, I wake my hubby up and he usually gets it worked out. I started drinking yoohoos bc a dr mentioned they are high in potassium.,.anyone else dealing with this common but ruthless prego issue?

  • I am too! I'm 30 wks today and I literally wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to sleep cause they hurt so bad. I sit there for hours popping my ankles and rubbing my calves. Recently my grandma told me to eat more bananas and before I go to bed to stretch my legs out as much as possible. I usually put one hand against the wall and wil pull one leg up at a time to my back. Also yoga helps a lot or even just taking a short walk outside before going to bed. Hope this helps!

  • Im 30 weeks and have been getting them alot recently when I wake up. What helps me is to not move leg that kills, but keep leg straight and point foot straight ahead towards wall instead of foot pointing up to air so your straightening leg from top to toe. This usually helps me and I have to agree with bananas I have noticed when I eat a banana everyday I have less cramps if i miss a banana a day or two cramps are back. Good luck!
  • They suck!! I try to eat a banana and drink plenty of water every day but my OB said that pregnant women are just more susceptible to them, and sometimes nothing helps! Ugh! Good luck ladies!

  • Often the issue is missing magnesium! I was struggling with leg cramps every time I would turn over in bed. My midwife and good friend who is a massage therapist both suggested magnesium. Often the supplement comes paired with calcium which is kind of a bonus since these little nuggets are needing lots of that!
  • I use to get those pains a lot but I have found a few things which help and now I hardly ever get them. Staying well hydrated and physical activity such as prenatal yoga helps a lot. When the pain hits I flex my feet back as much as possible and hold it like that until the pain is gone. Don't point your toes, it will not help, in fact pointing your toes is the same as what causes the cramp in the first place (a shortening of the calf muscle). Breathe deeply and regularly trying to focus on something like counting your breath, don't hold your breath.

One additional thing. If you are having the pain at night while in bed, make sure you aren't tucking your sheets in at the end of the bed and sleeping with your feet tightly under. That compression can make your feet point even more downward making you more prone to the cramps.
  • I usually get relief by standing up next to the bed when one hits.
  • Yes from about 20 through 26 weeks I believe it was because I was still working and I walked a lot I was a waitress on south beach and took the bus I stopped working at 27 weeks and it's completely gone away it could be because your later in your pregnancy and if your on your feet a lot it didn't happen with my first pregnancy either this time around it seems like it's tougher
  • I just had the leg cramps the other night while sleeping, the pain woke me up and I was short of breath, about to scream but held it in as I didnt want to wake up my husband and kids. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I never had this problem before. It happened with the right leg, then I went back to sleep, an hour later with the left...so annoying! I will try to eat more bananas, lets see if that helps.
  • I have had these every pregnancy. It is lack of potassium, magnesium and calcium. My DR told me to drink a glass of Orange Juice a day. IT HELPS! I get the pure premium Tropicana. I drink that when I take my vitamins at night. I rarely get them now and if I do they are not as excruciating. Good luck!
