Prenatal Vitamins

I'm at FTM (34 weeks) Every night when I take my prenatal I have recently started feeling really sick afterwards and sometimes I throw up. I have tried taking it on a full stomach and empty. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Re: Prenatal Vitamins

  • Yes, I don't take prenatals for this reason. The make me very sick. I didn't figure this out last pregnancy and felt like i had morning sickness for 9 months. Instead I take a regular gummy multivitamin with DHA and a separate slow release iron supplement. I think the gummy makes me less sick. I add the iron because mine is low. Cereal adds in the extra folic acid missing from the multivitamin, though that might not be needed this late in the game.

I may change. It didn't start happening until last week and it feels just like morning sickness. It's pretty awful.
  • It's more than likely the iron. I take the womens one a day gummy and add 400mg folic acid. I can't stomach the iron.
  • I switched brands 3 times before my midwife suggested target brand prenatal gummies. Never had a problem since no matter what time of day I take them.
  • I did the same and took the gummies from cvs or target. They had folic acid, just no iron. I started taking slow release iron too, but stopped since I was always constipated. All my blood tests always showed my iron levels were good without it.

Dr just recommended foods with more iron, and since sometimes all I wanted was eggs with spinach and toast, that worked out great. Good luck!
  • I used to get very sick from mine before I was even pregnant. I switched to a plant based vitamin from Whole Foods and haven't had any problems. I did recently have to start taking additional iron, however, and those give me horrible heartburn. Maybe try taking it earlier in the day so you're not laying down afterwards?
  • I take the prenatal gummies for that reason. You're supposed to take 2 a day so I split it up, taking 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening. That helped with the nausea.
  • Boo this sounds frustrating. Has there been any other changes to your diet or routine?

I think PP had good recommendations, if possible consider breaking it up to twice a day, taking it earlier in the evening and avoid laying down afterwards. Any of these things might make it easier on your tummy .

I've noticed a change the past few nights, the prenatals I'm on have never bothered me until reciently when I realized I needed to be taking them with a much bigger snack then I use too. I think it's related to heartburn. Anyways, not sure why things have changed for me either. Good luck mama!
  • All vitamins I have tried make me sick. I never throw up unless I take them. I take gummy multivites and iron and I get sick everytime.'y doc is going to be upset because I know my iron levels aren't going to be acceptable but I can't keep Either of them down.
  • I ditched my prenatal vitamins, I kept forgetting to take them. My doctor said they are most important to take during first trimester. If they are making you really sick maybe speak to your doctor about not taking them anymore
  • I get so queasy from my prenatal vitamin but it's much better when I take it at night. I have a really sensitive stomach in the morning so I made that switch early on!

I love my target prenatal gummies!!
  • I take Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal, have never had a problem with nausea from it. If anything I think it helps nausea since it has a little ginger in it. I also split up the dose so I take it 3 times spaced out during the day.
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one that's ditched the prenatal vitamins. I took them the first two trimesters religiously even though I swear they contributed to my morning sickness. Third trimester I tried the gummies and I liked them but then ran out and gave up. The doctor said it was fine and just to keep eating a healthy diet. Oh well.
  • Took them religiously first trimester...now I never take them. Physically cannot remember to. I'll take an iron if I remember to but even then, not so much. Oh well.

  • I take Citranatal Assure Vitamins. I've taken them everyday since I found out I was expecting. I've forgot to take them about 3 times during the whole pregnancy and I feel bad. X_X . I take them with meals, so I don't know if they will make me nauseous.
  • I agree with pps about prenatal gummies. They're yummy and don't make me sick like the pills do. No iron in them but again like pps eating iron rich foods makes up for it.
