Baby's behaviour during ultrasounds

I'm just curious as nearly all the threads I've seen where people have
seen their baby on ultrasounds, people have talked about how active the
baby is, doing somersaults and waving.
Am I the only one who has a
chilled baby? Mine just stretches out occasionally and sucked his thumb
once. I've had a few U/S now so I don't think it's a one off thing.
Anyone else have this or do I just have a lazy baby :)

Re: Baby's behaviour during ultrasounds

  • Just had my US and it was going crazy doing head stands and kicking and turning over. It definitely put on a show today.

  • I've only had one ultrasound (right around 10w) and Baby stretched and rolled over halfway.  That was it.  No somersaults or waving.  But seeing the baby move was way more exciting to me than it has been to hear the heartbeat.
  • My little one was pretty active on the us.  My first was active on the inside and continued the pattern once she got out too.

  • I've had two short ones. The first one (8w) baby moved around a little. The second one (10w) baby wasn't moving. Of course I was worried and dr assured me heart was beating strong and baby was probably just sleeping. My first was always so active during ultrasounds so of course I'm worried.
  • It could be a lot just timing. You'll notice when you can feel baby kicking later on that there are some times when baby will be very active, while there will also be long stretches where baby barely moves. With my current pregnancy, at the 8wk5day us, baby was wiggling all over the place. At the 12wk5day us, baby stretched a couple of times, but really appeared to be sleeping!
  • I had my first ultrasound on Monday and baby didn't move at all, he was sleeping but then again the appointment was very early in the morning. We did get to hear the heart beat which was great :) my first was also a very chilled baby and even when he was born he was a great sleeper so I'm not complaining and hoping for another great sleeper!

Totally normal. My twins were chill little hamster looking blobs at my 8 week u/s. Same with my first at 9 weeks and at 12 weeks he stayed upside down for 30 minutes so they couldn't take the n/t measurements until they starting banging on my belly and having me move around like crazy at 20 weeks+ he was pretty nutty.

I've seen the baby move at 2 ultrasounds - the photos show it just chilling, looking like it's lying down with feet up, but during there was some bouncing and arm and leg flailing. My husband can't stop smiling. It's super cute - we are hoping to get a little video if it happens again!
  • Mine kinda wiggled and moved its legs and arms but nothing crazy just little movements which my doctor told me it's normal to have a pretty chill baby because I worried because it didn't really move a whole bunch but had a nice strong heartbeat so it's all good lol
  • I've had one , at 10 weeks, he didn't move much, just lifted his little arm a couple times :)
  • My last appointment baby was chilling upside down lol
  • Thanks everyone for your replies. It's good to know that there are a few other sleepy babies out there :)
  • Had my first US today at 9w6d. Baby was so active they could barely get a good picture!
But as my daughter got bigger we had to poke and prod my belly to get her to move last time around. She was always sleeping when I had appointments. Try some water and a piece of candy next time ;)
  • At my 11w 2d US mine was waving, kicking and bouncing around like crazy. No flips though. I couldn't believe how much activity was going on in there!!
  • My last u/s was at 10w and there really wasn't much movement to be seen other than the heart beating. My next u/s is next week (13w)...and I'm excited to get another look!
  • I've only had one ultrasound, on Monday at 9w1d, and baby was just ... chilling. Probably sleeping. Not gonna lie, I was pretty jealous.
  • I went for my first trimester screening last Saturday and was exactly 12 weeks - got to see my little jumping bean! Using my uterus as a trampoline and waving its arms all around =) I ended up having to reschedule because they couldn't get the measurement they needed. I literally just got back about an hour ago and this time the baby was in the middle of a nap - feet crossed, hands over the face - and when the tech started poking the little stinker rolled away from us! Haha ended up stretching out eventually so we could get what we needed, but not as awake this time =)
  • We had our 12 week ultrasound yesterday and our baby was just chillin! The technician said it was the best behaved baby all day, lol. He didn't really move at all, just a little feet movement and hand above his head. Husband and I were worried but I guess its normal so thats good! Hopefully he's as relaxed outside of the womb as he is inside!
  • My baby was chilled out on his back until he was prodded to move. Then he'd roll over or stretch out his legs. A few times he was drinking, got to see his mouth move and his stomach fill up. He also had hiccups at one point.
  • My baby was busy sucking on his thumb and had his legs crossed at the ankles! :) relaxing like his mama. He also balled up a couple times and flipped over on his stomach.
  • Baby was moving around a lot first the the tech pointed out. My last pregnancy at the anatomy scan she was barely able to get all the pictures she needed because DD2 keep moving and kicking/punching the wand.
  • My U/S was at 9w6d and the baby was pretty chill moved it's arms a few times and that's about it ....my mom said I was the same way and continued after birth to be a sweet chilled child so hopefully that's what this baby is showing signs of being cool beans lol
  • My baby was very calm during the ultrasound (11w2d). Moved his/her arms and legs a little but otherwise was pretty still. In my first pregnancy my son was always bouncing all over the place during ultrasounds. He's 15 months now and still hasn't stopped moving. I'm hoping this ultrasound is a sign that this baby might be a little more mellow than my first :).

    Mine too!
Baby laid on his head the whole time! Lol
Even the ultrasound tech said "great, this sucks, your kid is on his head"!
She had to wake him up several times to try and measure his neck.. Then she did and he stick his tongue out.. Total stinker :)
  • Don't worry about it at all. The first time I saw my son during an ultrasound he was turning waving and jumping around going crazy. The first time I saw this baby ( baby # 2) he of she was pretty much just sitting there and turned slightly. Could be sleeping or relaxing, not a problem and very welcome. With my son my skin would hurt when he got big and would push all over the place in there, hope this one is a little less crazy

We had our IPS screening ultrasound yesterday, and what is normally a 20 minute ultrasound turned into an hour and a half affair. It was awful. Every time the technician touched the baby or got a good angle... away it went. I've already been told I'll probably have to come back on Monday or Tuesday for a redo.
  • #1 was very mellow and never caused problems for ultrasound techs. #2 was bouncing all over the place the other day.
  • @nbwells @lilmisskobe @geologynerd @Kristi4938 random question, do you guys know the sex.. just curious because all of you ladies are using 'him' and 'his' when referring to your baby.. Or is that just wishful thinking and you want boys .. Lol, personally I always catch myself saying 'she' because I REALLY want a girl this time.
  • No @JoReavesMommy I don't know the sex but I refer to baby as him bc I'm convinced I'm having a boy and also it's better vs saying "It"
  • I've only had one ultrasound at 9 weeks and the baby was moving, but nothing too crazy. It was mainly some kicking and stretching, but no rolling around or anything like that. My son was a crazy active baby and is actually still a crazy active 5 year old, and he was always going crazy on the ultrasound, but I don't think I ever remember seeing him roll around on the ultrasound this early.

  • One u/s at 8+3. My little bean was going crazy at first, but quieted down as soon as doctor (my clinic apparently does ultrasounds a lot differently than most) started taking measurements. Next one at 13 weeks. My doctor said we'll be able to do an u/s at every appointment...? FTM - thought that was normal... But the more I read on here, I'm realizing that's not normal at all..? Also, someone told me that drinking orange juice beforehand gives you a better chance of seeing movement - I'm sure just an old wives' tale, but interesting all the same.

I just had my first ultrasound yesterday at 12 weeks exactly. Baby was just laying there, and stretched a little bit. I've got my NT scan next Thursday and I am hoping to maybe see a little more activity.
  • Mine also didnt move was sleeping i think.....
  • @JoReavesMommy we don't know 100% yet, but at our 12 week u/s the technician gave an "educated guess" that it was a boy due to what looked like a penis. It's too early to know for sure though (at this point it could be a tailbone, etc). We shall see!! :)
  • At both 7 weeks and 11 weeks my baby was totally chill. Definitely just hanging out sleeping. I had to rollnon both sides and cough a million times to try and get it to wake up to measure its neck!
  • Baby was still totally chill today at 13 weeks. The only motion we could see was heart beating and some finger wiggling. I asked my doc and he said it's totally normal for baby to be not moving around much at this stage but I was still sort of hoping to see a little bit of action. Oh well...baby is healthy and growing well which is obviously most important! For those of you seeing lots of movement was it with 2d or 3d ultrasounds? All of mine have been 2d.

Our little one was moving around like crazy at our 10w u/s. So much that my hubs asked the tech "is this normal???" (She laughed.) But at my 12 week, she wasn't moving much at all, even with prodding by the tech. They asked me to cough because they needed a different angle view. The coughing seemed to work. She moved a bit but then settled back down.

I had my 11wk u/s today and my bean was kicking and flailing about! Very active!! My sisters all told me drink orange juice and/or chocolate milk before them and it makes the baby move and every one I have done that for and every time my baby is a wiggle machine!
