I posted this question on my Instagram and most the moms said that bumpers are either unecessary or unsafe. Even a nurse chimed in and said PLEASE don't use them and if you must, buy the mesh because she seems babies come in with bumper related incidents. As much as I think they do look aesthetically pleasing, I don't think just cause they look cute is a good enough reason to possibly put your little one in danger. To each their own though! I was dead set on it until I saw how many moms were against it.
My mom did mine last time, they were really firm and perfectly fitted the crib. I'm scared of they ones they sell because they always look so soft, but my son kept bumping his head with the top of the crib.
We didn't start using one until DD1 was 9 months, and then it was a mesh bumper and solely to keep her pacis in the crib. I wouldn't do it until the baby is older if you can.
I'm sure I'll receive flak but we've always used them. Baby was never in crib before 4 months and at that point mine were sitting/in control of head. If you're unsure about it definitely don't add any stress to your life just go without it!
I bought a mesh one as I have heard once they start to roll and scoot, they can get their arms or legs stuck through the slats in the crib and cause injuries.
(Lurker piping in) With DD1 we repurposed the bumper as a rail guard and it turned out really cute! Later when she was closer to a year we added a mesh bumper, but mainly to keep her pacifiers from falling out.
Nope. Won't be using one. I care about my children too much.

I used them with DS, but I used it around the mattress. Only 3-4 inches showed above the matress. I used them up until he started rolling. Before that he stayed in one place during the night. The more I read the dangers, the less comfortable I felt keeping them up. DS didn't start getting his legs and arms between the slats until he was past 1.
We have what I am loosely calling a 'bumper' for the bassinet that baby will be in for the first few weeks. It is straight up mesh, so that minimizes the risk of suffocation (plus, baby won't be rolling too terribly much by then). The ONLY reason that I am using them at all is because this bassinet is a family heirloom, and some of the bars are father apart than I am comfortable with, and I'm worried that he'll fling an arm or a leg out and get stuck. And I am actually still on the fence that we'll use the bassinet at all, but we'll see. Once he transitions to the crib, there will absolutely be no bumpers of any kind.
So glad I stumbled on this thread. I had no idea about the bumper debate as I am a FTM. Did some research online and have decided against the bumper. Deleted it from my registry. Better safe than sorry, I think.
We never used a bumper with our son, I hadn't purchased one and figured I would if we seemed to need it - he never got stuck in his crib rails or anything so we're going to plan on going without this time around too : )
We bought them with the previous crib sets we've bought and put them on the crib strictly for appearance wise of the room. My kids never slept in their cribs so it wasn't an issue of safety or anything for us, but if my kids did sleep in their cribs I would have removed them once they were able to move around.
We are registered for one, but LO will not be sleeping in his/her crib until he/she is much older. I see the value in them keeping arms and legs and paci's in the crib.
