Diagnosed with Gestational diabetes

Feeling bad about this diagnosis and can't stop crying. Have to meet with a dietician and test my blood four times a day!!! I've never been overweight and no family history of diabetes. Feeling so defeated. Anyone else dealing with this issue?

Re: Diagnosed with Gestational diabetes

  • I am! I got diagnosed early at like 16 weeks. I have to check my blood 7 times per day and inject insulin 4 times per day. not gonna lie, it sucks and at first I was devastated. same as you, couldn't stop crying. felt like such a failure. but as time has went on, it's much easier and sadly something you get used to. the diet is hard and I would do anything for a huge bowl of cereal. but it's amazing what we can do for our precious little babies!! good luck!!

  • Awww I'm so sorry to hear this, I myself didn't pass the one hr test so had to take the three hr test a couple of days ago waiting for results. Try not to be upset or sad, its all going to be ok. Just know our bodies don't react the same as if we weren't pregnant, and it doesn't digest sugar as well as it should because of different reasons but nothing we can't handle. Just be strong and know that will go away after birth don't let that ruine your day or rest of your pregnancy. Xxx You're not alone ❤️
  • I have it as well. Found out yesterday. It's, hopefully, a temporary change and while it's going to suck monitoring blood 4 times a day, it won't last forever. :D
  • My baby is measuring large and I get tested next week with another ultrasOund. I just don't want to give up sweets or juice :/ we will see
  • Try not to beat yourself up about it. There's really nothing you could have done to prevent it. I work out every day, and eat farm-fresh foods. I had no risk factors for it whatsoever, but I got diagnosed with it anyway. I won't lie, it sucks to not be able to indulge every craving, but Pinterest is full of incredibly yummy recipes for things we CAN have.

  • Just remember that GD is manageable which is great--there could be much worse things but you can control this :)
  •  I was diagnosted with GD with my first and second pregnancy. I will get tested in a few days with this pregnancy and I'm sure I will fail it this time around as well, my body just doesn't produce enough insulin to break down the sugars like when not pregnant, so I don't beat up myself for it. I will just have to change my diet and eat less and cut down on sweets and carbs, which is really hard for me, but we do what we have to for healthy babies :)
  • I have to start taking insulin because my body is becoming more resistant to my own insulin. Extremely annoying. Meet with the endocrinologist sometime next week....again
  • Don't worry at all!! I have GD, have to test my blood, and ate super healthy before the test and the baby. In fact, I've only gained 9 lbs during pregnancy and that means nothing. Your body can't process that much sugar and that's okay bc you probably will never ingest that much sugar again!

Checking your blood is easy and doesn't hurt. I've never had a high number since checking.

Basically you are eating low carb now. You can still have steak, chicken, fish, turkey bacon, cheese, wraps (try Joseph's), vegetables (but not corn, peas, or potatos). Mexican food!!

At night I have 3 cookies or 3 chocolate truffles to satisfy my sweet tooth. It's all about moderation and eating frequently.

Talk to your OB about how this may affect your due date. Otherwise, you are on track to having an easier time losing the weight post baby bc you are going to be eating better!
  • I totally understand how you feel- I was devastated to find out - but please don't worry. It's one of those things that happens to around 8% of people and mostly it's just bad luck and hormones. The diet isn't too bad to follow (not going to lie, i do get cravings for a big bowl of pasta or a big slice of cake sometimes!) but it's really not that restrictive. You quickly learn what you can and can't eat, get used to pricking your finger, remembering when to do that (I always set an alarm on my phone for my after meal checks as soon as I start eating) and you'll realise which foods your body can handle. Eg for me I can eat small amounts of choc straight after a meal (which I include in my carb count), can eat two slices of bread or a fair amount of potato in a meal, but even tiny amounts of rice put my numbers over target. Track your foods at first and you'll realise quickly what works for you. As a PP said, it's controllable and if well managed, the risks of having a large baby, and therefore early induction and intervention during delivery are greatly reduced. Please don't stress x
  • And what works for someone else may not work for you. My body hates me I've decided. I can't have carbs or sugar without it going haywire. I can't have dairy without my sugars going nuts. Lots of protein which I hate meat. But been sucking it up because I have to
  • I'm feeling the same. I feel so sad and like I'm already a bad mother even though I know nothing could be done to prevent it. I am neither overweight nor ever had any health issues in my life. I'm so worried about my baby. I've read things saying that high blood sugar in pregnancy is linked to children with autism. So I've just been crying and praying. I just want my baby to be alright.

I've read somewhere that GD is linked to children with autism and this freaked me out! I had GD with both pregnancies and my kids are perfectly healthy, so this time around I dont worry too much...let's be honest, these days, you can link, food, formula, vaccines, the air we breathe to autism...it is very scary but true. Just try to relax and enjoy the pregnancy. It is all in God's hands. :)
  • Gestational Diabetes does not cause a child to have autism. Please do not worry about that.
  • I have never heard the autism thing either. I wouldn't worry. I have GD and never found one thing I researched linked to this
  • I have it too. While it sucks to not be able to give into cravings, there are way worse things that could be wrong, so it's really nothing to get too upset over. Just remember your doing it for your baby and it will be over soon enough!
