2nd Trimester

Fetal Brain Cyst

I went in yesterday for a routine check up and was blindsided. As I'm laying
on the table waiting to her my baby girl's heart beat the doctor drops the bomb
that she has a cyst on her brain that needs to be watched. She went on to tell
me That even though all the tests so far have come back normal this could mean
the baby might have down syndrome. At this point by brain quit functioning. I
felt numb . I went home feeling dumbfounded. After things had time to sink in I
ended up with a lot of questions. I called the doctor asking if they could take
some time to discuss this with me further over the phone and was told I would
just have to wait 8 more weeks. At this point I'm feeling very frustrated and
uneasy. Has anyone else had this experience? I'm looking for more information
to help me understand this condition a little better. Thanks in advance to
anyone who can help

  • No advice but just wanted to say I'm so sorry that is really terrifying.

Any way you could change doctors? Anyone that would have you wait 8 weeks after something like that isn't worth their salt. My ob is having me come in every 4 weeks minimum and always responds if I call with a question.

Good luck, I'll be keeping your baby in my thoughts

I second this. My OB has me come in every 4 weeks so I would definitely see if you could get a second opinion or at least get your questions answered in the meantime. That is quite the bomb to drop and then not answer the questions you will inevitably have.

I'm so sorry and will send positive thoughts your way! Good luck mama!

  • I am so sorry to hear that you are going through this. T&P that everything turns out fine. I completely agree with PP's that you may want to look at a different doctor - that is BS to drop a bomb like that and then not be available for questions until your next appointment (which 8 weeks is also very long, most are every 4 until closer to the end). Unless it was just the person at the front desk that told you this? In which case I would call back and ask for the nurse, just say you have a medical question and then talk to them.
  • Hi there! Try not to worry. One of my good friends had this happen to her DD when she went in for her 20 week U/S. They found 2 cysts in her brain. She went for routine U/S every 4 weeks after that and the cysts did not go away until she was 35 weeks! She went in every time seeing the cysts and got more and more concerned but in the end, they went away and she had a happy, healthy baby girl. The doctor told her that it could be a marker for downs like you said, but her doctor also said that since there were no other indicators (nuchal fold looked good, femur length looked good, growth, amniotic fluid, spine, etc) that it was unlikely that her baby would have downs. While it does increase the chances, it is not an absolute. There are some babies who have no markers of downs in utero and are born with it anyway and then I know of some moms who have had amino tests, quad screens, etc and they got a high chance their baby would have downs and they were born perfectly normal. Your doctor will probably just want to monitor her brain for the remainder of the pregnancy. Don't be discouraged if a cyst is still there at the next U/S (since my friend's baby took a long time for hers to go away). Hugs to you in the meantime! Everything will be okay.

I just got the same news yesterday when I went in for my 21st week visit to find out the sex and complete some measurements. I was crying my heart out for hours. The ultrasound spotted two CPC (5mm each in size) in our baby's brain. I had the NTS done and some blood work (from the arm, not the tummy), both read fine (the doctor did not go over the exact ratio). I am feeling so stressed and nearly depressed as I wait for my level two scan. Blessing health for our baby.
