Buisness of being born

Anyone else watch this documentry? I wouldn't recommend watching it while pregnant like I did. It freaked me out and makes you think everything the doctor will give you or do to you is going to harm you and the baby. I find myself even worried about having ultrasounds done. Did any of you watch this and change your birthing plan based on this film?

I've been debating on whether or not to watch. A friend of mine recommended it but then also said she didn't know if I should wait. She said its a lot of information but It might also scare me.
  • I watched it while pregnant. Didn't really freak me out. That's only one side to it, but I think it was a good documentary. And if you trust your OB (or if you have a midwife), it shouldn't really scare you.
There was a post on this a while ago. Back in February I think, but had a lot of great feedback.
  • I watched this & it changed my mind on some of my birth plan ideas but not all of them , it's very educational if you're a first time mom or even looking at doing a drug free birth . I learned a lot & would recommend watching it :)
  • I watched it. And loved it. I want a natural birth and this reinforced such thoughts. I'm English And the process is so different in England - midwives deliver, not obgyns. Doctors/surgeons are reserved for risky cases, not the standard. Most people give birth with minimal pain relief, epidural is also of popular. You certainly cannot scheduled a c-section unless there is a medical reason! People over here seem to be scared of giving birth naturally... The documentary show you how the system adds to this anxiousness.
  • I agree with you guys. It did freak me out, but I also agreed with a lot of the points made by the film. It made me happy I am seeing a midwife. It just made me fear drugs that may be used in the hospital and ultrasounds. And I'm also not brave enough to do the whole home birth thing.
  • Planning a home birth. Watched it. Dug it.
  • I think the documentary was pretty generalized. I live in the north west US and from the statistics in my state, the show was extremely wrong.
Whether you want med free or not, research your doctor, area and the possible on call docs so you know what they typically do.

  • I think it's great to watch, it's an experience that you will go through so why not watch. It made me more determined to deliver vaginally with my last. And guess what, I did!!!
I also shared all of the information that I myself researched, with my doctor and that's why she gave me the go ahead for a vbac after 3 cesareans. I did so well with that labor, at the hospital she actually told me if I have another baby, she encourages me to deliver that way again. I laughed and said I was done!!!! Oops!!!!! No I wasnt!! Haha
    Here comes #5!!!
  • @Kmommy5 that is so awesome!! Good for you!
  • I am planning a natural in hospital birth. I loved the documentary. It really reenforced a lot that I already felt and educated me a lot. It made me more certain about the birth decisions I was already leaning towards!
  • I watched it while pregnant with my first.  I was already seeing MWs and planning a med-free hospital birth, so it didn't really change my birth plan.  I think it brings up some good points, however with any documentary it is biased and you have to take it with a grain of salt.

"More Business of Being Born" is interesting too if you want to see more!
  • I watched it shortly after I found out I was pregnanct. Never freaked me out and never changed my mind about my birth plan. Just be strong about your birth plan but also try to be flexible with the drs. If things are going well, then relax and know that they can't rush you if its not necessary. If you need to tell them what you want, then do so. Don't let them push their wants on you; just stick to yours.
