Tmi question about after an internal exam

I thought I was leaking fluid this morning so I went in to be checked. I am 38-6 today and have been having cramping and tightening. She checked the fluid and it was negative. But now I'm having contractions about 7 minutes apart and 30-45 seconds long. I've also noticed a pink "stringy" like discharge in the toilet. Could this be just from the exam? I was induced with both of my previous pregnancies and I'm not sure what's going on. Any thoughts?

Re: Tmi question about after an internal exam

  • If you aren't sure call the doctor. That's the best suggestion I can give you. When I had my first internal last week I had brown (read: old blood) discharge for two days. I also lost my mucus plug three/four days after. Good luck!

  • I plan on doing that too, I just remember reading something somewhere (not sure if it was here since I searched and didn't find this topic recently) about irritating the cervix and having spotting after an internal exam.

I think you did read it here, bc I remember a similar post. A woman was talking about a particularly nongentle check that left her bleeding. I'm a FTM so I can't tell you much but good luck, maybe wait for the 5-1-1 before going to hospital; but like PP said, call doc if bleeding persists.

  • I'm probably over thinking it and it's probably just an irritation from today. We'll see how the night progresses I guess! Thanks!
  • I am in the exact same boat as you. Had leaking Sunday, went and got checked and it was negative. I was told that spotting in normal and cramping but to call if it was within the 5-1-1 and if I was bleeding like a period. Hopefully we can keep cooking for another week or so!

Glad to hear that you're experiencing the same stuff! I feel like I'm just going to be pregnant forever! Clearly I know I won't be as my due date is next week and he has to come out sooner or later!
  • Do the contractions slow with a bath or laying down?
  • I can't take a bath and laying down doesn't seem to make them slow down at all. I was really irritated when I finally got home and thought about my visit today. I told them about the contractions and was never put on any type of machine to monitor them to give me an estimate of where I was! Seems to me I should have at least had that option also.
  • I was the one who had the bleeding after a rough exam, it was as heavy as a period, passing clots too and they still sent me home (shame on them lol). Mine stopped after 3 days, still passed small clots and also seemed to lose some pieces of my plug.

Had a lot of the same issues--contractions, still having cramps, "fluid" leaking (was negative as well) etc.

Keep an eye on the bleeding. If it doesn't lighten up, then give your doctor/midwife a call for sure. And also for regular contractions. Having a timing app on your phone would be good, I've found mine incredibly helpful.

The nurse who did my exam said spotting was normal, but I bled lots more than spotting. The exam bed had blood and it was as heavy as a period and they didn't look into it.

I asked my OB at last week's apt and she said that when you aren't dilated that much you can have more irritation and that some people are more sensitive than others.

    When is your next appointment?
  • I just got an internal exam done today and my doctor told me to expect some bleeding and discomfort after it.
  • My next appointment is next Wednesday which is also my due date.
  • When I lost my mucus plug with ds it was kind of stringy like that and was tinted with blood a little. You could be losing your plug. Sometimes having an exam can kick start labor.
Keep an eye on the intensity and timing of the contractions. Maybe this is it!!

  • I always contract after internal exams for some odd reason. My cervix gets irritable but with a day they seem to calm down. My doc avoids internals with me and since I'm a repeat c/s I don't mind. Good luck.
