Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

sippy/whole milk/picky with solid foods.

We have tried many sippy cups -our 12mo old just doesn't want water. Spits it out immediately. We're down to just the night time bottle with half formula and half whole milk (slowly transitioning) so I'm trying to give him water with meals and snacks. Do you give a bottle or sippy of milk with meals or just for morning/night time?

Also, he seems to only like pouches/baby food. I keep trying to offer different solid foods on his tray, he throws them right on the ground! Drives me nuts. So I'll put a piece on a spoon or give it to him directly, he spits it out doesn't give anything a chance! So far-puffs, cheetos, yogurt, pouches (fruits) mostly but I do sneak in the veg/fruit combos. Anyway - is this the beginning of a picky eater?? Or he is just funny about textures? Noodles/bananas/ect.. do I just keep offering and trying different things? Sorry about all this mess lol. .thanks!

Re: sippy/whole milk/picky with solid foods.

  • He'll eat/drink when he's ready. In terms of water or milk, my son has 3 servings of whole milk each day,
about 4-6 ounces each. One in the morning, one in the afternoon, and
one before bed. We give him water with meals and offer water throughout
the day if he is thirsty.

My little one is 17 months old and he is very particular about texture. Slowly but surely, he's trying new things. I stick to the things he likes and try to eat with him as much as possible. If he shows interest in what I'm eating, I let him try it. He still eats a lot of purees rather than whole fruits and veggies.

From what I've read, this isn't an indicator that they will be a picky eater. Just remember that everything is new to them and it might take time for them to adjust and learn to like things. I really think it is a texture thing for my son. If you're concerned, chat with your pediatrician. But as long as he's growing I'm sure he is fine.

  • My DD was slow to drink water and a finicky eater too. We started limiting her bottles to one in the morning and one in the evening and just giving sippy/straw cups during the day. We didn't want to take away her morning and evening bottles until she started accepting the water better to keep her hydrated. She is 17 months now and drinks pretty good from a  variety of cups. Id say just keep offering and eventually they will become more accepting of the different kinds of cups. it just takes time.

In regards to food pretty much the same thing. just keep offering, try new things all they time, let him see you eat it, let him feed you bites. Let him "Play" with food and don't pressure him too much to eat, just kind of discover it on his own. 12 months is still pretty young and you are just now entering the stage where solids becomes a larger focus than liquids, so try not to stress too much :-)
  • I agree with PP keep offering, eventually they decide real food tastes better. I'm not much help on feeding but as of the water issue we had a terrible time getting DD to drink water from a sippy or bottle but when we gave her an actual glass she had a much easier time drinking out of it and did a lot better for us. It was small probably about the diameter of a silver dollar and held maybe 1/4 cup liquid. We offer water or juice with meals and then milk first thing in the morning at nap time and at bedtime 6-8oz a time.
