Rh negative?

Hi! So my bloodwork came back today that I'm Rh negative. They gave me a bunch of paperwork to read and explained that they'll have to give me a shot to prevent complications and the baby getting anemia. Have any moms gone through this? Should I be worried?

Re: Rh negative?

  • I have it. It is nothing to worry about. I needed a shot early because of some bleeding because of placenta previa. I will need 3 shots instead of 2. Just make sure you get them when needed.

I'm rh negative and so was my mom. Nothing to be worried about, a lot of people have it and there is no increased risk these days as its very treatable with the shot. I'm sure the papers they gave you would explain it better than I could !
  • I have it, had two shots with DD, and will have two with this one. It's NBD and very normal.

  • Same here - nothing to be concerned about! My doc said whether they give you the shot depends on whether your SO has a positive or negative blood type. If he's positive, you get the shot - but if he's negative, you don't (my hubby is positive so i'll be getting it at 28 wks). If you do experience any bleeding or spotting just be sure to get in touch with your doc right away as you may need the shot earlier.

Thanks, y'all! They told me it was no biggie, but I wanted to double check. It's nice to be able to hear from experienced ones. :)
  • Yep I am too, all was good with number 1 :) it's nothing to worry about.
  • The shots are very important, so definitely get them if needed. If you don't get it with your first, problems could be worse for future pregnancies :) Just a little friendly advice from a lab tech.
  • It is definitely not a big deal, but as someone else just said, if the baby has positive blood factor (because it is the dominant gene and if your partner is positive, then all of your children will be) there could be blood mingling in birth and your body will create antibodies to attack any future pregnancies. Technically if your partner is negative, then you don't need the shot, but since docs can't confirm the father, they just give the shot to everyone who is negative!  The shot will prevent the antibodies from forming.  You will have to get the shot for all pregnancies.
  • I'm negative too so shots for me. My doctor said they will do it the same time as my glucose test about halfway through the pregnancy. But if I have any bleeding/spotting before then I should come in right away.

  • I'm negative and my partner is positive. He's a lab tech, so we've have lots of discussions about the craziness that is the immune system. Will be asking my doctor about the shots at my next appointment (they did the blood work but haven't brought it up).

Do not worry! I had two shots during my last pregnancy because I bled early. It's the second baby that your body could reject, not the first. My
Baby was rh positive and I'm negative so I got a shot right after birth too so I didn't build up antibodies to attack future rh positive babies. I'll get a shot at 28 weeks this time again and am not worried at all. It's such a common thing that they have known to treat for for many many years.
  • You will get a shot of RhoGam at 28 weeks (or earlier if you bleed) and after the baby is born you will get another if the baby is a positive blood type.

It is a good thing to remember though! If something ever happens with a pregnancy and you are away from your normal provider it is good to know!
  • I am Rh negative and so was my mom. No big deal. You have to have the shot any time the baby's blood can co-mingle with yours. I had one about 4 weeks ago when I had my CVS and then will get it again at 28 weeks. They put the needle in in your butt. Considering I have a huge fear of needles, it was easy and painless. My partner doesn't know his blood type, and even if he did and it was negative, they said they'd give me the shot anyway, as a precaution.
  • ask for it in your arm. any major muscle group is fine for this shot
  • I'm Rh negative as well. I got the shot when I was pregnant with my son at 28 weeks. After they found he had my exact blood type at birth, I didn't have to get the second shot. They also checked to make sure I was still negative for the antibodies at my first appointment this pregnancy. I am but will still be getting the shot this pregnancy at 28 weeks since we don't know and won't know babies blood type until birth.
