Canada mommies - what clothes are you buying for baby?

Need your input. I can't decide what to buy for our little babe for clothing. We are team green so going to start with basics. I'm thinking mostly onesies and some sleepers? But how many? And what size? NB.. 3 month? Does babe need a toque? Pants? Sweater? Or are blankets sufficient?

Team green here too. I have onsies ranging from newborn to 3 months, long sleeve onsies, a few rompers, a few gowns, cotton pants and sleepers. I have no idea how big baby will be so I have a mix of sizes. I definitely have cotton hats, some parents don't use them but I think they're important.

I plan to swaddle and use blankets since it's a June baby. You can always get more clothes if you need once baby arrives, just go with a bunch of basics.

In terms of how many, I'm still not totally sure. I think I have 25 or so long/short sleeves onsies in various sizes, I think that's fine for the first while until I can figure everything out.

First time mom, so I'm not entirely sure how helpful this is!

  • I don't think they'll need toques or anything excessive for in the summer, but depends on where in Canada you are. I have some long sleeve sleepers and swaddle blankets, and a couple pairs of long pants and sweaters for the evenings. They say to put your baby in one layer more than what you're wearing, so for the summer time maybe a onesie/shirt, pair of light pants or shorts and maybe a sun hat to protect their heads. You could always take a sweater with you for if it gets cold. Nothing too hot for when they're sleeping, a swaddle blanket should be fine on top of their sleeper. I have all sizes up to 6 months, but a lot of them have been gifted to me from other people. I'd say buy some stuff 0-3 and some 3-6 months in case they grow out of things quickly.
But I also am a FTM so I could find that what I think is dressing them appropriately could change.
  • STM but my first was a March baby, so not much experience with summer newborns. I agree with the other ladies.

I'll also emphasize Sun hats (as a pp mentioned). You won't be able to use sunscreen on the LO so you will need to provide protection by means of light clothing and sun hats!

  • Second time Mom and my last babe was born end of May. He wore a lot of onesies and we swaddled him. He had some cute outfits/shorts for special outings. We had a huge range from thin cotton onesies to footed fleece sleepers for cold nights/rainy days. We had the cotton hats for the first few months but we didn't use every day. I definitely think they are important. We have air conditioning in our house so it was kept cooler at times. I didn't buy hardly any newborn stuff and he was born 7lbs 6 oz. We had to buy newborn stuff right away and he was in newborn things for a couple months. One thing that absolutely was not important was shoes until I had him in padraigs in the fall/winter and then when he was older we got robeez type shoes.

  • I'm in a part of Canada (Calgary) where we could very well have snow in June so I have mostly sleepers. I went with the lighter cotton ones in hopes it is a more typical year. I ranged them from newborn all the way to 12 months. I think I have about 5-7 newborn for now and will get more if need be. I bought some lighter hats (not toques) just in case we have some chilly mornings. I also bought some summer clothes and onesies in preparation for hot days. I have two summer babies as it is and I know that living here, the weather could be anything. (We snowed in September last year). I also plan on using blankets and swaddling.
