Mamas w/ toddlers - baby monitors

Wondering what the other mamas of toddlers will be doing about baby monitors for their older child once the new baby arrives. My DD1 will be around 18 months when DD2 arrives and in my opinion, will still need a monitor is her room. Therefore, we will need 2 monitors. My husband thinks I'm crazy and that she's old enough to go without one. I want to make sure I hear her when I'm downstairs or sleeping (I have a fan in my room for white noise due to the loud city noises around our house). What's everyone else planning to do?

Re: Mamas w/ toddlers - baby monitors

  • My toddler will be three and I will have a monitor in both rooms. Probably till they are 18:)
  • Loading the player...
  • I will have two separate video monitors in my old two's room and one for the baby's room . Mainly so I can still see what my 7 and 3 year old will be doing!
  • I will definitely be keeping the video monitor in DS's room and getting a 2nd for DD's nursery.
  • I might have two baby monitors for my toddler and my newborn. I know it might sound crazy to some but what if my toddler gets a stomach flu and pukes in the middle of the night? I want to be able to hear him and what he is doing (especially now that we are eventually moving him into a toddler bed).

I'm getting a second camera for our monitor. It can scan between the two and it's cheaper than a whole new set.

  • We haven't used a monitor with our DS since he was 18 months.

  • I just stopped using a monitor for my 4 year old in her play room, but she sleeps with us. If she didn't she still would have a monitor in her bedroom. Better safe than sorry.

  • Thanks, ladies. I glad to hear I'm not alone in wanting to keep one in both girls' rooms. Like @Armyers2 said, I probably will til they're 18.
  • With have the dual View by summer infant and just got a third camera. It will scan between all three of my kids and my oldest will be 3 and half when baby gets here.
  • My daughter sleeps in our bed for most of the night. (Don't judge!) but I have a monitor in her room too for when she's in there. I'm sure I will do the same for baby girl 2 as well.

I haven't used a monitor since his newborn days and then sporadically here and there if say I was out side.

I think the whole neighborhood can hear him when he wakes up... plus I have the silly sensitive mom hearing. I'm a super light sleeper. Even across the hall with both my door and his shut.. a cough wakes me up.

I'm with your husband on this one. if you really need peace of mind, I'd get a cheapo audio monitor for the toddler and switch the video monitor to the new baby.

  • My LO is two and will be sharing a room with baby boy. But the monitor we bought came with two cameras. :)
  • Definitely getting a second camera. We plan to transition my 2yr old into a big girl bed before baby gets here and I can't imagine not being able to see what she is doing once she has free reign of the whole room at night and in the morning! We'll be using 2 for awhile. Love that I can talk to my daughter through the monitor too. That is a great option to have on your monitor with a toddler!
  • My DD will be 21 months when this DD arrives. I have a video monitor now that I cannot expand. I plan on buying a dual camera video monitor to use during the day so that I only need to carry one monitor. At night, I will use the old one and new one. The idea of the dual camera scanning between the two rooms scares me. I'd like to know that I can hear both girls at the same time at night, instead of scanning every few seconds. Plus, I use white noise, and I've read that if you scan between the rooms, it's really annoying because you will never get the two rooms' sounds to be the same.

We bought a dual screen monitor...so we only need one monitor but can see both rooms on it.

  • I have a monitor in the room my 10-year-old and 4-year-old share.... if this baby was in a separate room I'd have a separate monitor. But baby will be with us for quite a while.
