Since my last one was a week late, I was not even letting myself anticipate going early. The only thing that made me think I might was that my IL's were out of town for a week, and that would leave us with no one to watch our other two boys (step-son, 9, and son, 2.5). Murphey's Law, right?
Well, last week (38 weeks) my annoying back pain turned into EXCRUTIATING back pain - I could barely walk to the bathroom without tears. Made a chiropractor appointment for Thurs, otherwise I was going to need some kind of narcotic.
Never made it to that appointment, though. That morning I felt a strange but familiar sensation - I was pretty sure it had, and a few more good gushes were enough to have me make DH rush to pack a hospital bag (I was so behind, between my back and expecting to go late again), round up the toddler, and head in to the hospital.
Tested positive for amniotic fluid! Proceeded to wait around for hours, waiting for contractions to start. (Spent that time finding someone to watch the boys, and thankfully one of DH's friends took them overnight.). They never really got serious so they started me on some Pitocin. Now, last time, my water broke and it was the same thing - slow contractions, needed Pitocin to move things along because of infection risks - but the epidural I had been planning on wouldn't go in! And the pain that followed was the worst thing I had ever experienced. So I was terrified I was setting up for a repeat performance. But bless that anesthesiologist! She listened to my story, checked out my spine, went very carefully and she got it! From there on, I could relax - even sleep!
Then, suddenly, there started to be pain again. And pretty bad, too. They checked and I was only 5 cm, still. But about half an hour later I was 10 and ready to push! (When they tell you "you'll still feel pressure" with an epidural, be aware, "pressure" still hurts.). In fact, little Micah pretty much pushed himself out - we were trying to wait for the doctor and a resident who needed to observe a delivery. Nothing doing, he was coming out, ready or not. The resident made it in time but the doc totally missed it! Only needed one stitch this time and recovery has been a breeze.
Baby Micah is perfect, getting off to a better start with breastfeeding than his brother did. Just need to get him to latch deeper so he stops squashing Mommy's nipples! Ow!
