How did your labor start?

I am so anxious! Wanting to know what I might expect! This is actually my second baby but first time my water broke so I wasn't even having contractions when I went to the hospital and then I woke up to them really strong right away in the middle of the night at the hospital and I was super disoriented and out of it because they gave me something to help me sleep, so I feel like don't even know what labor starting this time is going to feel like! I am just a little crampy tonight and feeling anxious about whether this is it or not!!

Re: How did your labor start?

  • I'm curious about this as well. I'm a FTM and will be 38 weeks tomorrow. Just so ready to meet my little man. I am worried that if my water breaks I won't know it unless its very noticeable or for some reason I won't know that I'm having contractions. Silly worries, I'm sure, but still worries just the same.

  • I have a very high tolerance to pain so I can't feel contractions! Here is my experience.......

Baby 1- woke up 41w 2d went to the Dr and was told I was 8cm dilated time to go upstairs! Ahhhhhh!! Felt no pain.

Baby 2- woke up at 5am with an undeniable feeling of needing to go poo. Went to labor and delivery as I was 41wks 4days and scheduled for an induction the next day

I have a high pain tolerance too, so I can't tell the difference between movement and contractions since both make your belly hard. With #1 I was in labor 7 hours before deciding this was it and then slept through a lot of it after being admitted.

#2 and #3 I was induced. So this time I'm super nervous I won't know.

  • Thanks for posting this - I'm in the same boat and want to know what to look out for when labor begins.  --> My water broke dramatically with my DS and we rushed to hospital only to have my labor not progress. They put me on pitocin, which was awful - and contractions were unbearable.

Hoping for a more natural beginning to labor this time around and I've been told to watch out for cramps, backache, etc.

  • At 40 wks 3 days, around 3 am, I started having consistent & strong contractions, but could still walk & talk through them. I took our dog for a long walk and went in to my midwife to check my cervix. I was barely at 3 cm so they told me to early labor at home.

I waited until 11 PM then my contractions stopped & I was convinced I'd have the gestational period of an elephant so I started using my breast pump to keep contractions going. At midnight I fell asleep.

I woke up at 1:30 to pee but it felt funny when I did. Almost like I kept peeing a little bit or that it had a slimy consistency to it? Then my contractions started again but I didn't think anything of it so I wanted to shower to stop them if they were just Braxton Hicks again.

I went to our room to tell my husband that I was going to shower but ran back to the bathroom feeling as if I was going to throw up but it ended up being diarrhea (yep! bowels flush in early labor)

By 2 am my water really started to break & the contractions were no joke. I could hardly walk back to our room, didn't say a word, and hardly remember even opening my eyes because I was just trying to concentrate on breathing through the contractions.

We got to the hospital by 2:30 & our son was crowning - too late to get an epidural. Pushed for 3 hours (didn't know he was stuck on my cervix). For anyone going natural I highly recommend a water birth!
  • My contractions started similar to period like cramps. I noticed them when they were coming every 15 minutes or so. Both times my water didn't break until the dr broke it when I was dial acted to 9.5 cm.
  • Love hearing these. I can't tell the difference between contractions and moving either.

Ughhhh! I seriously feel you on this! I CANNOT tell the difference which makes me think I haven't had contractions at all lol but I feel uncomfortable every night when I go to bed because I think it's her moving. Is it possible that it's contractions?!?!?
  • I was so sure I had a high pain tolerance... And then she swabbed me for strep B and in my head (not out loud) I was like UM OUCH! So now I realize, if a cotton swab bothered me, I'm clearly not as immune as I thought. \:D/
