STM+ advice about pads

With my first, I had not bought any pads and then when I sent DH to the store, I hated the kind he bought. Since I had a rough birth, I couldn't get to the store. I felt bad because he had been so sweet about it so I made my mom sneak and buy a different kind. I hated those too. Apparently I had strong feelings about them. Anyway, this time I went to the store a week ago and made sure to buy the kind I wanted. So if you have anything you might be picky about - go ahead and go to the store now. :)

Re: STM+ advice about pads

  • I agree with this so much. Stock up on and buy what you want now. Sending someone else is aggravating really!

  • Is it sad that I tried this and came home with a different kind than I thought? I've had it several times that I'll have something very specific in mind when I go shopping, think I pick the correct thing, only to get home and see it's completely different. Gah. I blame it on pregnancy brain, but it sure is frustrating.
  • Good advice... I definitely remember having to send DH out for items right after we got back from hospital and he was so clueless (and it was kinda embarrassing for him). Who knew that I'd need Tucks wipes / hemorrhoid cream, stool softener, pads, and all sorts of other personal / recovery items after giving birth...  Definitely get some of the things you'd prefer or think you'll need ahead of time :-P

  • I don't think I'm going to like any kind, I'm not a pad kind of person, but I bought some always heavy duty overnight type pads to start with, really hoping they work and I don't need them long so I can at least move down to some thing smaller.
  • Im a first time mom but I think im going to be adventurous and try the Always adult diapers. Ive always hated how the pad seemed to get crooked or sometimes that my thighs are squishing it together in the middle. Obviously tampons are a no go. so I think im just going to match the LO and get some diapers :p

  • Do u really HAVE to wear the giant ones they give u at the hospital? Or can i just bring My own to wear? My gf recently gave birth and showed me the pads. They are HUGE. I'm very tiny 5'1, 98lbs pre pregnancy, narrow hips/boy shaped :-(. I literally wouldnt even be able to fit those in the largest pair of underwear I have. Or even fit them between my legs without being bunched. Everyone claims u will bleed so bad u have to wear those kind.
  • A question to tag onto this post.....Do you recommend the thick big horrible pads for PP or are the overnight ultrathin pads okay?
  • I'd plan on the big ones. I had a C-section with the first and still needed the thick ones. Unless you are willing to part with underwear the thin ones just aren't going to cut it. The diapers are interesting, but my grandmother always complains that they trap heat and make her sweat.
  • For the hospital and the first few days you really do have to have the big giant hospital ones. There is a lot of discharge. It's not like a period. It gets better but it is really heavy at first.

  • I would definitely use some of the thicker overnight ones in the beginning. It's gonna be heavier than a period and you really don't want to be getting up every 30 minutes to change a regular thinner pad. Ew.

The adult diaper idea is interesting but I haven't been brave enough to check them out at the store. lol
  • You are going to need the big pads. I wouldn't worry about them fitting in your underwear, the hospital usually gives disposable undies. They totally rock, so much easier to take off and throw out right away. There is a lot of blood, and it's thick.
  • Thankfully, my DH works at a local Walgreens and if I write down specifically what I need, he'll get it. If he doesn't, I just send him back with it and he'll handle it. The joys of having a Pharmacy Tech for a DH are not lost on me. He's no longer weirded out by buying the things I need, no matter how outlandish they might sound.

I did, however, go ahead and buy some Tucks for my hospital bag. I plan to use the big pads at the hospital while I'm staying there, and the disposible underwear. I did that last time and it worked just fine for me. I still will likely get DH to buy some large over-night pads soon for when I get home since I went through the hospital ones they gave me pretty quick.
