Packing for hospital - c sec vs vag birth

I guess this is more for STMs+

Any difference in packing your stuff for the hospital if you are having a C section versus a vaginal birth?

I sort of had everything figured out for a vag birth but since I'm a schedule C section now not sure what all I would need instead or in addition to.

  • Loose, soft clothes as your incision can be tender. I didn't try it last time but thinking of taking a fiber powder or supplement with me this time. You have to pass gas or have a bm to be released and my cousin took something and was released super fast! Movies, magazines - you will be there a few days. And definitely a comfy blanket and pillow. Good luck mama!

  • I have only had c-sections but I can't think of anything I pack differently than I see on normal hospital lists. Like most everything else, they provide everything.

  • Comfy clothes and just more of the usual stuff since you will have to stay in he hospital longer. I went out and bought me some granny pantys bc the incision line is usually where my underwear sits. I didn't buy a ton of new undies but just enough to make it to get my incision to a point where it's not so tender. But just pack to plan on stayin 2-3 days most often people stay 3-4 days depending on healing and how much your moving around and what time your section was performed.
  • Hi. 4th time c-sect here.  I'm bringing my tolietry bag, because I'm not a fan of hospital shampoo/etc.  Also bringing a loose fitting tank style nightgown, a robe and cheap slippers (they will have you up and walking) that I will throw away at the hospital. I will bring an ipad/charger/magazines/phone charger.  For baby - just a going home outfit & blanket.  I dress baby in those wrap shirts & swaddle blankets that the hospital provides.  If I need anything else, I'll have someone bring it up for me.  I've always gone with only what's necessary, as hospital provides everything else (undies, pads, nipple cream, belly wrap/waist cincher, breast pump, diapers, snacks/food - though I don't feel like eating usually till the 3rd day, etc.).  One note - Ask the nurse for the colace right away (helps to pass gas).
  • Yeah my hospital says 48-72 hours for their C section releases.

  • You will need a small pillow for your incision. It really helps getting in and out of bed and anytime you sit or stand. My hospital provides one, but just in case they don't, pack it.
  • I'm bringing my laptop and charger. Most of my family lives far away and I will be taking advantage of the free wifi and skyping to show of lo to family chats. The days last soo long for me from what I remember. I would rest, but there is only so much sleep you can get in a hospital bed. Other than that just the norm like pp say.
  • FTM but I've asked a lot of my c-section mama friends and they've all said to mind the incision. So granny panties and loose pants that sit well above the line. And definitely bring a good pillow from home to press against the incision site when you first start walking. I'm so happy someone gave the recommendation of taking fiber or asking for Colace. That was nowhere on my list. I'm also bringing a boppy for feeding LO...don't want little feet kicking down there. ;)
