Why is my newborn suddenly rejecting her binkie?

She was doing wonderful with the binkie when she was born on april 9th, and up until three days ago. She tries to suck her thumb a lot, but cannot get ahold of it. I try to help her with her thumb/fingers, and the pacifier, but she can't keep ahold of either one. Now there is no consolimg her when all other avenues have been taken. (Fed, burped, diaper changed, held, rocked, etc) Please help! Neither of us are sleeping much anymore! :(

  • Mine never took a paci either.
    DS born 10/25/11 **  DD born 6/24/13 **  DS born 4/20/15
  • My baby is 2 weeks old and can't soothe herself either. I don't want to give her a pacifier this young and the dr said to put your little finger in her mouth (pad of finger facing the roof of her mouth). Works for us!
  • Are you breastfeeding? Ive heard a lot of times that when a baby is breastfed they wont accept a bottle or pacifier at all

I read about using reverse psychology to help train a baby to keep his pacifier in his mouth. I think it may have been in The Happiest Baby on the Block. When she's sucking on the paci, pull it out a little. She will suck harder to keep it in. Gradually, this will increase her muscles and help her hang onto the paci or thumb. I've been kind of doing this with breastfeeding. When DS stops sucking and starts to just hang out there, I act like I'm going to pull him off. That gets him sucking again! Good luck!
  • Ditch the stinky binky. Its a poor habit for babies and kids to start. It may ease your ears for the time being, but it doesn't teach them to self sooth, which in turn can cause problems later --- emotional and behavioral.
  • I had 2 babies with binkies. It was a very useful tool with my first who was very sick for his first year. It made dr appts, shots as well as fasting for testing and procedures that much easier! My second child was cranky and had a bit of an addictive personality! He carried his equipment - binky and woobie until about 2. It was easy to wean him of this as opposed to a thumb. (Can't take thumb away!) Neither had teeth damage. My third baby so far hasn't taken to a binkie yet but I really want her to and hope she does!
  • Take it as a blessing. My first had to go to the nicu at 40+4 for a week and was on the binky before I even got to breastfeed her. She was obsessed with it until about 18 months then only had it at bed and it was the worst trying to wean it. My new baby doesn't want anything to do with them. And I'm fine with it.
  • Try switching the types of paci she is on. I got so many as gifts from my baby shower and out of like 9 of them he likes 1 and I haven't been able to find another one yet. And the nipple shape is harder to find of course!
