SO lost job today trying not to stress :(

My bf was working for an agricultural company that is based out of Canada and is successful there. They decided to expand to the US and that's how he got on. Well he started to realize the company did not think this out well and basically tried to expand to the US with no game plan and the opportunity presented to him wasn't what it seemed. So for the past few weeks he's been looking for other jobs. He met with his career recruiter and told him the situation and right after the meeting got a phone call the US company has been dissolved and they are only being paid thru until today. Wtf? These are salaried employees with degrees. Is it even legal for them to fire them with this short of notice and no severance? The US branch started in December. I'm 38 + 1 and now we're going to be jobless with a newborn. I'm trying so hard not to stress especially since I have a heart arrhythmia and anxiety. But how do u not freak out when ur SO comes home and says "I lost my job."

  • Oh my goodness! Don't stress my dear. Your SO sounds like a very capable and qualified worker. He'll find a new and better job soon! All will be well. You both need your baby now more than ever to keep your hearts joyful. I hope you have family and friends to help you in this time of transition.

Unfortunately, there are no legal requirements for a company to offer severance and being let go effective immediately seems pretty standard.  I'm sorry you guys are going through this!  Hopefully, he'll be able to find something quickly.  Regardless, get going on the paperwork for unemployment ASAP, and try to relax and enjoy having him around for a bit after the little human arrives. :)
  • I thought it was different when it comes to company going out of business vs just downsizing. The HR lady is looking into options for the employees. They're all calling each other freaking out. My bf boss felt very bad as they grew close and he knew we have a kid on the way. He called unemployment today and what he would get is not anywhere near enough to cover all of our expenses. But i guess its still something. They even had the nerve to tell them to send all the office equipment back to the company in Canada and the us branch is based in the Kansas city area. I don't think they are even going to cover the shipment. just ugh woosah.
  • So sorry :( my hubby got unemployed during my first pregnancy so i know the stress. Really hope you can get unemployment benefits filed quickly.

It may become a blessing and a better door open up.

  • My husband and I went through a similar situation when our first was born. It was terrifying and so stressful. However, we did get the gift of family focus time (when we weren't panicking.) But, you do all you can to move forward and treasure the unexpected gift of time. You get to devote so much precious time to your new baby and the new family dynamic. It's not an ideal situation, but I'm so glad we got to go on little summer day adventures with the baby - and we got to do it all together. Good luck and do all you can to remember the good in the lousy hand you've been dealt. Good luck!
  • All I can suggest is that you immeadiately apply for WIC and Snap benefits in addition to unemployment! We all have unnecessary/luxury expenses. Maybe if you cut out some expenses and budget tightly you could get by for a while until he's able to find work. Hoping for the best for your family. Im so sorry this happened to you guys!
  • That is incredibly shitty! Have faith that your family will come out on top. Positive vibes being sent your way!!

  • Same! My husband lost his job over an FMLA dispute just Tuesday. I'm beyond stressed and we have no idea what to do since, clearly I can't work and help out right now. My c section is scheduled for Thursday....
  • Just an update. Thank u ladies for ur support. My grandma is shipping us the last few things we need (baby tub, crib mattress & nursing bras) I was able to get the wic and snap benefits for myself (bf didn't qualify for snap because monthly income for April is too high) and they told me I can add baby once she's born. We are still working on the unemployment. The company may be giving them their vacation days on this last check. If they do that will last us 2 months. Hopefully he's working before then. In the meantime we will just have plenty of time with our daughter and to learn how to be parents. it's very stressful but everything happens for a reason.
