Throwing up and diahrea? How's a girl supposed to stay hydrated?

38w1d and as the title says, I have this amazing combination of diahrea and, as of this afternoon, vomiting. Are there tricks to staying hydrated? Anyone experiencing both symptoms at once?

  • Yikes. I haven't had this as a third trimester symptom, but I had that lovely combination when I had the flu a couple months ago and I just did popsicles and Gatorade, just little sips, whatever I could keep down.

  • Oh no! You poor thing! I had a violent sickness bug at around 32 weeks and I found very small sips of water and weak fruit cordial kept me semi hydrated. Also ice lollies (Popsicles) definitely helped. You can go without food for 24 hours if you have no appetite but try to drink. Take care and contact your doctor if it lasts more than 48 hours.
  • I had this last week and needed L&D to monitor me overnight while administering fluids.. It was a violent but luckily quick GI bug. Felt better a few days later.
  • Coconut water. You can also try ice cubes vs sipping.
  • I had to depend on ice chips for a while. Couldn't really sip. But would recommend contacting your doctor if it last longer than 48 hours.

This could be a sign that your body is getting ready for delivery. I would contact your OB/_midwife in the morning.
  • Small sips frequently of whatever fluid sounds good to you. But yes, definitely call your OB line if you haven't already. No sense taking chances. I had a stomach virus a couple months ago and was advised to go in for IV fluids if I went 8 hours without peeing.

  • You are going to be running low on electrolytes so definitely try to keep taking in water but also Gatorade or juice. When I had the flu a couple of months ago I kept a bottle of water and a glass of juice with me at all times. Alternate between sips of them. I hope this doesn't last long for you. Sounds awful!!! Keep a close eye on your output and go get IV fluids if you need to. I came very close to dragging my butt to the hospital to be hydrated. But fortunately the vomiting stopped just before I was getting to that point.
  • I had a stomach bug about a month ago. I called my OB and was told that something causing vomiting and diarrhea was going around. She (weirdly, but helpfully) suggested NOT trying to eat or drink anything for a few hours. It might have been because anything, no matter how small the sip, was coming back up. It worked though. My stomach had a chance to settle, I got a bit of needed sleep, and after I could stand small sips of Gatorade. Her stipulation was that if I went 24 hours without keeping anything down, I needed to go to L&D for fluids.

Sounds like you may be getting ready for L&D and could see your LO very very soon. Good luck mama!
