cloth diapering veterans

I'm a 2nd time mom, but did disposables with my first. Seriously considering doing cloth this time around.
What areally your favorite styles and brands? How many should I invest in? And is it worth it?

Re: cloth diapering veterans

  • I prefer sunbabys (pockets), between 15-24 diapers depending on how often you want to wash and I think they are worth it. I spend apx $600 on diapers (I have over 100 shhhh) which is about 24 boxes of disposables depending on brands and used them for two kids soon to be three so they have certainly paid for themselves.

  • We cloth DD and will continue it.

Style we like most are the pockets in one size. The majority of our newborn size are aio's.

Brands we use are lil joeys are newborn and pockets we have fuzzibunz, bumgenius, and sun baby.

I would recommend buying different kinds or rent them through a cloth diaper store or service and try them out because different styles work for different people.

As for how many, it really depends how often you want to wash. I wash every three days right now and have about 20 diapers which is more than enough. My daughter is 16 months and is not a heavy wetter though so again it probably depends on the child.

I also used the sun baby pocket diapers^ and had about 20 of them. They were actually gift used from SO's aunt. We used a mix of cloth and disposable just because it's easier to use disposables when you're going out. I would definitely recommend it! It saved us a lot of money in the long run.
  • Yep, I'm with these ladies, pocket style are our favourite. Have about 50 or so and did laundry every few days.

    Some helpful hints

    1. We didn't bother with cloth for the first 2-3 weeks, didn't feel it was worth it to buy special newborn sized cloth diapers.
    2. We have one extra large wet bag for in the nursery, one goes to and from daycare, and one to carry around in the diaper bag.
    3. When our son got to be around 9 months old he was constantly soaking through the cloth diapers at night, we switched over to night time disposables.
    4. We use kushies Liners that are biodegradable, nice and easy to remove poop to flush down the toilet.

  • Thanks ladies, it seems a lot less scary this time around. I found a lady selling 23 brand new diapers (All styles) for $125.
  • I'm planning to cloth diaper and I have a question....this seems kind of silly but here goes...With the pocket style, can you put the liner on the outside instead of tucking it inside so when baby goes you can just replace the liner if it isn't soaked through?...or does it lead to leakage? Side note, I was totally blessed by my adopted dogs old mom and she gave me a variety of cloth diapers from her kids. Like 25 Bumgenius diapers! So awesome! I feel so lucky!

The purpose of the pocket is so the wetness is wicked away from baby's skin and held in the liner.  The soft part of the pocket stays pretty dry.  You need to change both parts with each diaper change or your baby could develop a rash.

  • We used pockets mostly bum genius but towards the end of cloth diapering I bought a few grovia hybrids. I must say I liked those better they just gave more options like being able to reuse the shell if the baby is just wet. I liked the way they fit better. We used cloth and disposables....whatever was more convenient at the time but I am looking forward to putting those cute diapers on this baby :)

If your using microfiber inserts def not. Microfiber should never touch the skin as it draws moisture away and will cause a rash.
