Sleeping with dogs?

this is my first pregnancy and we have three dogs (they've been our babies up to now). One of them is very use to sleeping on our bed and cuddling with me. I am sad thinking that we're going to have to break this habit, but am thinking that for sanitary reasons, comfortable sleep later on in the pregnancy, and preparing for baby's arrival it is best to start now. Anyone else have fur babies that sleep with them? What are you doing?

Re: Sleeping with dogs?

  • I'm in the same situation! Have only one doc, but he's been our baby for the past 10 years and sleeps with us every night. I honestly think I'll have a bigger problem with him not in bed than he will. I've been putting it off but it's definitely the right thing to do. Good luck!

  • Our dogs sometimes come in the bed but they always "ask" and they actually don't usually prefer our bed (to sleep in over night) over their own. I am not exactly afraid of any of their fur/dander/germs and the baby - exposing babies to allergens at an early age decreases their chances of having allergies!

My advice would be to get a great and cozy bed for them, and maybe even start with it in your own bed, then move it to the floor next to your bed, and then wherever its final destination will be. And make sure they know the command "off" so that when they do jump up uninvited, they know to get off your bed. (All while giving them tremendous praise for good behavior, of course!)

I just bought mine a doggy bed that sits at the end of our bed on the floor. Its been 10 hours and they are already using it!! :-)
Our dogs are supper smart and attentive whenever we say things, so they train very easy.
  • I have an 18 month old Staffy/four legged child and he is very a affectionate dog. He has a bed next to ours which he sleeps on until he knows we are asleep and when we wake up he has made his way in between myself and my husband over the course of the night. This is my problem/situation too as well as him getting on the couch. We are trying to catch him trying to get onto the bed and making him go back to his own and then eventually out of the room all together. I think the quicker you can get them sleeping in their own bed the better. Good luck x
  • I got my dog when I was pregnant with my daughter and he was a puppy. He slept with me every night through my pregnancy and is still sleeping with either myself or my almost 6 year old daughter. ;) I wouldn't sweat it.
  • @Sazzamattazz that's exactly what our dog does. The other ones are too little so they cry in the morning when they want to come up and cuddle.

Thanks @kepoole ! That's great to hear. Hope our pups love our baby when he or she arrives!

@keemee10 ditto! I have attachment issues. lol

@vmatt850 and @SoCalBeat I'll try the doggy bed and see how it works.

    Thanks ladies!

My doggie snuggled up to me every night even while I was pregnant sadly he passed away a month before DS was born, but he would lay his head on my baby bump and go sleep like that every night.

Edit: Forgot to mention that while bump got doggie face, my face got doggie butt. O_o

  • I have a sweet little year old yorkiepoo who is attached to my hip lol the problem I'm having is that if she is up then she wants me to be up. I have really bad ms so I can't just jump up out of bed. She's driving me crazy! We've tried to get her to sleep in her own bed, but if she's not in ours she barks and cries all night and no one gets any sleep. We tried putting her bed in ours (which worked ok) but moving her bed to the floor was a disaster. Any advice?

Our 70 pound boxer pup climbs in our bed between 2-3 am every morning. For the sake of being able to sleep peacefully and not listen to him play or whine at 2am, we don't mind for now. We even just upgraded to a king bed even to be more comfy. Honestly, it will be best to eventually keep him on the floor, but it may be easier said than done. We are definitely pushovers with our fur baby!
  • My dog sleeps with us every night and I have no intention of breaking that habit. When baby comes they will be safely in a bassinet next to bed, so I don't see any reason to kick the furbaby out. As for sanitary reasons, I'm a germ freak so every night we wipe him down, paws and everything with doggy wipes to make sure he's clean.
